We are a family. They were a team. のような文でも，主語は複数，補語は単数ですよね。 people や family は，「集合名詞」と呼ばれる，少々特殊な名詞です。“グループを指す名詞”と考えてよいでしょう。 be動詞で結ばれる主語と補語の単複がそろわないのが，直観的にオカシく思えるのはわかりますが， ａ＋ｂ＋ｃ＋ …… ＝ Ｐ という感じでとらえられるとよいのでは？ なお，蛇足ですが，集合名詞には，とらえ方によって，単複どちらの扱いにもなるものもあります。 The couple was/were often seen walking on the 24th street.

Japanese, Chinese, English, Spanish, Friench, German などは、 the + ～ の形で、その国民全体をします。そして、複数扱いします。 people は、 国民、民族 という意味の集合名詞です。日本人は、単一民族ですから、 a people です。 →集合名詞、family, police, etc.

the Japanese(『日本人(全体)は』)が複数扱いの集合名詞だからだと思います もしisにしてしまうと『その日本人(個人)は』とでも訳すほかなくなってしまい、意味が通じません

何はともあれ, [例文] The Japanese are a diligent people. を覚えておくことをお薦めします. (意味等は調べて下さい. 国民です．) 理屈は他の方がつけてくださるでしょうが, 先に用例があって, 大抵は後付けなので, 細かい規則を覚えても, 例外があったりして，結局個々の典型的用例をある程度覚える方が先と思います． (意識しなくても使えるレベルの経験者はいいのでしょうが)．

There are lots of people.の構文がわかりません。再度、質問です。 There are lots of people.の文で、主語は lots ですか、それとも people ですか。 辞書では、a lot of は 沢山の と訳しているので、全体が形容詞的働きをして、そのあとの people を修飾しているようにも思えます。 a lot が名詞で、of が同格ならば、 There is a lot of people.となるということでしょうか。 There are a lot of people.とはならないのでしょうか。 よろしくお願い致します。

中学の教科書に The people here are very poor.：ここの人々はとても貧しい。 と言う文章が載っているのですが、なぜThe people hereで「ここの人々は」という訳になるのかわかりません。 The people of hereではないのですか？ 副詞が後ろから名詞にかかっているように見えるのですがいいのですか？ 副詞を名詞にかけることはできませんよね？ ここの何々は・・と言うときはこういう形になるのですか？ よろしくお願いします。
