SCIENCE 13 july 2012
(1) The U.S. National Institutes of Healthe and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention ― prodded by AIDS activists such as Mark Harrington of the Treatment Action Group― steadily ramped up support for basic research as well as efferts to develop and test treatment and prevention interventions.
(2) By any measure, The United States has played a vital global role in unraveling HIV's mysteries, providing help to the infected and protecting the vulnerable.
(3) The meeting organizers shunned the United States because of an immigration ban on HIV-infected people imposed by Congress in 1987, which President Barack Obama ended in 2010.
(4) In keeping with that shift, Science(横文字表記) is focusing this special HIV/AIDS issue on America, now home to an estimated 1.2 million HIV-infected people ― many of whom have little in common with the original five gay men in Los Angeles.
(5) Correspondent Jon Cohen, working with photograpers Malcolm Linton tnd Darrow Montgomery, visited 10 U.S. cities this spring, and the package of stories that begins on p. 168 describes the varied epidemics and responses.
(6) Online, a slide-show offers more images and stories about the country's epidemic, and Science(横文字) Careers features profiles of two yong HIV/AIDS public health workers making a big dent in big-city epidemics.
SkillSelect is an online service that enables skilled workers interested
in migrating to Australia to record their details to be considered for a skilled visa through an Expression of Interest (EOI).
SkillSelect is an online service that enables skilled workers interested
in migrating to Australia

I found the gap of two generations between my parents and me easier, in a way, to bridge than a single generation gap.
S=I
V= found
O=the gap of two generations between my parents and me
C=easier
挿入=, in a way,
to bridge than a single generation gap.
than の後には、a single generation gapとしかありませんが、
O=the gap of two generations between my parents and me
My mother married my father largely, it seems, to help him out with his five motherless children.
(1)Having any herself was a secondary consideration.
But first she had a girl, then she had another girl, and it was very nice, of course, to have them, but slightly disappointing, because she belonged to the generation and tradition that made a son the really important event; then I came, a fine healthy child. She was forty at my birth, and my father forty-nine. Four years later she had another son, and four years later still another son.
(2)The desired preponderance of male over female had been established,
and twice five made ten.
(3)I found the gap of two generations between my parents and me easier, in a way, to bridge than a single generation gap.
Children seldom quarrel with their grandparents, and I have been able to think of my mother and father as grandparents. Also, a family of ten means a dilution of parental affection; the members tend to become indistinct : I have often been called,"Philip, Richard, Charles, I mean Robert."
Having any was a ~.
in a wayは挿入なので、これを省くと、
I found the gap of two generations /between my parents and me/ easier to bridge than a single generation gap.

A secondary consideration was having any herself .
「she belonged to the generation and tradition that made a son the really important event.」
We still see some ceremonies. However, they are now considered as the
interesting rest of the old days rather than important ones in society
as they were in the old days.
