”結果として、彼らはひとつの家族としてより緊密になった。そのことは次の攻撃に彼らが適応するために極めて重要な事であった。” becomeの意味とattackとの関係を取りかねたのですが、becomeの主語となるのはthey = a family と考えられます。bcomeを自動詞として「～になる」としてしまうと、「彼らが彼らの新しい攻撃になるために」となってしまうので、becomeを他動詞として「～に適する」「～にふさわしい」と考えました。ただ、この用法は、服が合うとか何かが、人にふさわしいとかで使われるケースが多いので、少し自信が無いのですが、他の解釈を思いつきませんでした。

become で SVO で「～に似合う」というのはあるのですが、 主語は服装など、目的語は人間というのが普通です。 ただ、「～に似合う」というのではない、というのは英英辞典を見ればよくわかります。 それに文語的な用法で、普通には becoming で形容詞として be becoming on 人 とします。 attack がなんなのか、前後を見ないとわかりません。
