A No.1, A No.3 の回答をしたものです。 Important as women's role in business and community life is in America, Though women's role in business and community life is important in America, Happy as she was, I didn't want to break the news to her then.

1.研究社 LIGHTHOUSE second edition より as(接)6.(文語)・・・ではあるが(though) Rich as he is, he is not happy. Try as he would, he could not jump over the fence. 2.More often than not,…「しばしば(10回のうち5回以上)」 a woman's job outside the home …主語 is (simply)…動詞 a means…補語「手段」 of earning a living until she is married…meansへ or of supplementing the family income after marriage…meansへ so that she can buy things (for the house and the family) that would not be possible on her husband's salary alone. so that S can…「Sが…できるように」 that would not… 3.Since a large proportion of women in America now attend a college or university,…理由の副詞節 another reason for them to work…主語 might be…動詞 because they want to satisfy interests (which) they have developed as a result of their study,…補語(1) or because there is a need (in the community in which they live) for their services in the area in which they are trained.… 4.regard A as B 「AをBとみなす」asの品詞は前置詞です。

1.Important as women's role in business and community life is in America, most women see themselves primarily as homemarkers. Although women are important (as women's role in business and community life is in America), most women see themselves primarily as homemakers. as women's role in business (仕事で女性の役割として =は前置詞) as community life is in America (アメリカの地域社会生活で存在するために =は接続詞) 1つのasで前置詞と接続詞の両方を使っていることになるかな、またはandで結んでいるために名詞句に掛かる前置詞としても良いはずです。 2.More often than not,a woman's job outside the home is simply a means of earing a living until she is married or of supplementing the family income after marriage so that she can buy things for the house and the family that would not be possible on her husband's salary alone. ↓ A woman's job outside the home is (simply more often than) not a means of earing a living until she is married or of supplementing the family income after marriage so that she can buy things for the house and the family that would not be possible on her husband's salary alone. A woman's job outside the homeが主語 *untilの接続詞は副詞節ですがisを修飾しているのでしょうか? 3.Since a large proportion of women in American now attend a college or university, another reason for them to work might be because they want to satisfy interests they have developed as a result of their study,or because there is a need in the community in which they live for their services in the area in which they are trained. "because A or becasue B" A節または、B節のどちらかの理由により、another reason for wemen to work might be (もう1つの理由・・女性にとって・・働かなくてはいけない・) *which they live forのforの概念は[理由]でしょうか? 4.In spite of a job, however, most married women regard their homes and families as their primary concern. as は前置詞で、 一番大切なこととして ~として 例外があるのかもしれませんが、基本的な考えとして、asの後に名詞(句)が来る場合は前置詞で、節(主語+動詞)が来る場合は接続詞と理解してよいと思います。

以上 旺文社 基礎英語長文問題精講 中原道喜 著 p.134 より (出典)G.G.Doty & J.Ross : Language and Life in the U.S.A. The mind is no less capable in women than in men of making this from resolve which constitutes virtue and of recognising the circumstances in which it should be practised. women can control their passions just as well as we can, and they are not more inclined to vice than to virtue. One could even tilt the balance in their favour on this issue because affecthion for children. which is incompara bly stronger in women than in men, is naturally linked with compassion which, in trun, could be called the virtue and tha bond of civil society. it is impossible to imagine that society is reasonably established for any other purpose apart from the mutual satisfaction of needs and common necessities. And if one looked closely at how passions arise in us, one would find that the way in which women treat us when we are in distress, almost like their own children, is like a natural development of their contribution to the birth and education of men. Thet the differences which can be observed in the conduct of men and women derive from their education It is all the more important to notice that the dispositions with which we are born are neither good nor evil, because otherwise one cannot avoid a rather common mistake of attributing to nature something which results only from custom

I was distressed to hear Anne Symmers support the view that women in our armed forces should be allowed to serve in combat positions, because otherwise their career paths are blocked. This is another example of women being asked to adapt to rigid(man-made) institutions, instead of the structures of such institutions being altered to offer women career paths with status abd financial rewards equal to those available to men, but for jobs that women do well, as women. 特にbut forやasの意味がわかりません。

The third stage is what Duvall referred to as the authority period , in which the family are bringing up pre-school children , with the oldest between two and five years old. Essentially, the parents have to train their pre-schoolers to behave in a socially acceptable way , and not like tyrannical little monsters! This, too, can be a deeply demanding phase for the parents. Things often ease up a little when the family enters the interpretive preriod , in which the oldest child is between five and 13 years old , and at school. (The reason why Duvall categorizes these stages from the age of the oldest child is mainly because this signals the need for the parents to learn new behaviours. They have already learned most of the behaviours they will need for younger children-although each child is different, of cource.) The fifth period in the family life cycle is the interdependent period, which consists of families with teenagers. At this time it becomes possible for the teenagers to take more of a share in the emotional and physical aspects of the family , and the relationship between parents and child can become a two-way, interdependent one rather than a simple, one-way , denpendent one.

Then there is the sixth period, which Duvall refers to as the launching period, as the young adults emerge to become independent in society . Typically, this period involves some degree of support from home-perhaps providing a home for a child who is away at college during term-time, or providing help with furnishings or a regular Sunday lunch for a young adult who is independent and working. This period lasts from the time when the first child leaves , to when the last child leaves home. The seventh of Duvall's stages is the empty-nest period, when all the children have left and the parents are together at home . This can be quite a difficult adjustment for some couples , particularly if the children have been the exclusive focus of attention for most of their time together. Some couples , though ,find it a pleasant relief , because it means they can simply enjoy one another's company again. They often begin a number of co-operative activities that they weren't doing before , such as redecorating, or travelling. The final period in the family life cycle , described by Duvall, is the retirement period , in which the members of the partnership who were working are now retired . This , too , can be aperiod of re-adjustment , particularly if one of the couple has been accustomed to having the house to themselves for most of the day.
