またまたお邪魔します。 私の持っているOALDは古いもの（第5判）で、can についての語源的な説明はなかったので can の定義が何故 know how to なのかわかりませんが、少なくもここで使われている can は know how to という意味で置き換えられるものではないと思います。語源的解釈という意味でならわかりますし、I can't imagine が I don't know how to imagine に置き換えられることが可能なら、質問者さんのおっしゃっていることも納得できますが、現実的に can の持つ意味はそういう定義とは異なっていると思います。 複数の同じような意味を持った単語のニュアンスを追求する場合には語源的解釈もそれなりに重要だと思いますが、ここで can の意味を解釈するために語源的解釈を追求するのは、実用的な意味から離れて行ってしまうという点で、あまり得策ではないように思います。 実用英語においての助動詞は話者の意思（確信度）を表すものであって、特に、can, could, must, may, might, will, would, shall, should, ought to, used to, dare, need などを「法助動詞」と言って、動詞に「可能」「必然」「義務」などの意味を添え、主語の意思、能力、義務などを表す働きをしています。 I imagine ～ . は「～を想像する」ですが、I can imagine ～ . は「～を想像できる」という I という主語の意思を表すことができます。この場合、話者と主語は同一です。 なお、参考文献として、『旺文社刊、綿貫 陽他著；ロイヤル英文法』、『北星堂書店刊、田中 実著；英語構文ニュアンス事典』、OALD（第5版）、Collins English Dictinary（第3版）を使用しました。

一度目は、彼に交通費を出してもらって、フランスに行き会いにいきました。 今回も彼の方から、次はいつフランスに来るの？と聞かれたので、行くつもりでいたのです。 しかしながら、その２週間後にこんなメールが入ったので、彼の気が変わったのかもしれません。 諦めたほうが良さそうですね。 I was doing some thinking this weekend, and I feel somewhat bad if you're going to fly all the way to France and spend your hard earned money just to see me. It's just that at the moment I'm not sure if I can get into a serious relationship with someone long distance because it can be difficult to find the time to fly internationally. So I think it would be better if you don't spend your money this time, and hopefully I will be able to visit Japan again soon and be able to see you again that way. Would that be ok?

The reason I tried is is because I have a company in HK called pinkberry ... then I found out that it's actually a frozen yogurt store in the US ... funny. On Saturday I went running ... I suffered so much again. Luckily I didn't bring my mobile phone to track my route ... it would have been a disaster. Tomorrow I'm going running again. Then I hope to do better. Okinawa ... yes ... you can be my guide! I would really like that. But first you should come to Belgium. I you will still be excited to go to Belgium after having been to NY? I think we would get along very well while traveling ... actually maybe we would get along all the time ... But then again ... who wouldn't get along with such a pretty and sweet girl ... Please try to get some rest ... so that you can enjoy your holiday as much as possible. I'm also going to bed now ... maybe I'll dream that I'm in NY with you :)

何度も恐れ入りますが、 ”I imagine ～ . は「～を想像する」ですが、I can imagine ～ . は「～を想像できる」” というところまではとてもよくわかりますが、 その次の （それが）”I という主語の意思を表す” という部分はやはりよく理解できませんでした。I can imagine ～ . はmatchboxtwentyさんが日本語にしているように「～を想像できる」ということ（これがknow how toであるかどうかは今は触れません）だと私も思います。しかし、それは主語（この場合は＝話者）の『能力』もしくは環境による『可能性』の問題であって『意思』ではないと思います。回答No.5にある法助動詞のご説明は、法助動詞の１つであるcan独自の説明ではなく法助動詞の概括的説明であると思います。より個別的には、主語の『意思』を表わすのは主にwill, wouldであり、canは主に可能および能力を表わすのであって、canそのものに主語の『意思』を求めるのは無理ではないでしょうか。 いずれにせよ、何度もお付き合いいただきありがとうございました。感謝いたします。
