【英語】These are cases where ～の構文
YahooUKのニュースで（http://uk.news.yahoo.com/040817/140/f0hoz.html） These are cases where people had spoken to the authorities to say they thought friends or relatives might be in the area and they could not immediately be contacted. という文章があります。意味はわかるのですが、構文がいまいちよくわかりません。to sayの役割、There are cases whereの厳密なニュアンス・役割。 私の思う訳は、「人々は当局に、友人や家族が、該当地域にいるかもしれず、すぐに連絡が取れなかったと話しているという」。なんだか変です。 どなたか教えてください。

こんばんわ。毎度です。 該当の記事が見つかりませんでしたので、正確なことは言えませんが、"to say" は#1さんが書かれているとおり、"they" 以下のことを伝えるために、人々が当局に対して訴えかけた（？ニュアンスがよくわかりませんので）という理解でよろしいのではないかと思います。 "There are cases where" に関しては、"There are cases in which" と同じで、「これらは、人々が当局に訴えかけたケース」と素直に訳されたらいかがでしょうか。 （前後の文章によってニュアンスが変わるのかも知れませんが） 最近アルクの英辞郎がお気に入りなのですが、以下の例文が載っていました。これらと同じ使い方かと思います。 cases where scientific uncertainty remains 科学的に不確実性が残る場合 many cases where British and American people can't agree among themselves how to pronounce a word 単語の発音についてイギリス人とアメリカ人の意見が一致しない多くのケース

「to say」は「言うために」ではないでしょうか？ 意味も深く考えず訳すと、「authorities に『to say 以下のこと』を言うために、人々は話した」みたいな。 新聞などの長い文などは苦手なので、「to say」についてしかお伝えできないのですが…。 ご参考になれば幸いです。

I’m (over)due with my second child, and I am not looking forward to the “help” that will come when she is born. When my son was born, my in-laws came for a week. They helped by holding my son, soothing my son, playing with him—all the things I wanted to do. To be fair, they also cooked and cleaned a bit, but I had no idea how to tell them to let us bond.
