ご丁寧な「補足コメント」をくださり、ありがとうございます。 貴重なご意見・ヒントをいただきました。「コランバスの全編を読みましたが、コンマが不必要に入っていたり、逆に必要なのに入っていなかったりしていた」を拝見して、「そうだったんだ！」と合点しました。しかも、問題部分の前後をつき合わせてみると、目からウロコというか、迷いが吹き飛んだ感じです。 そこで、「回答者が教えられてどうする！？」と恥じつつ、自戒しつつ、もう一度考えてみました。ある意味、振り出しに戻った、と言いますか直観・第一印象でよかったんだと、妙に「溜飲が下がった」気分になりました。一応、（前言を取り消して）再考の結果を以下に掲げます。 ＞＞上記でshe thinks that's the way I'm supposed to smellを訳者の佐伯彰一氏は「ところが、女房のやつ、わしが酒くさいと、決めこんどる」と意訳しています。 ＞＞どうしてそういう訳になるのでしょうか？ ⇒私も、そういう訳にはならないと思います。このsheは明らかに「女房」でなく「子ども」を指していることが明白です。そして、訳としては、 《子どもは、この匂い方でオレだと分かってくれるんだよ。》 といった感じでしょう。 ところで、根拠もなくふと思ったのですが、もしかしたら、これを翻訳したときの佐伯氏の頭にドイツ語のことがちらついたかもしれませんね。それというのも、ドイツ語では、「赤ん坊は中性名詞扱い」しますので、それが潜入観念としてあって、無意識のうちに「sheと赤ん坊を結びつける回線がなかった、可能性から削除されていた、というか存在していなかった」のかもしれない、と憶測した次第です。 ＞＞She'll give me a thrombosis that kid. を佐伯氏は「女房に言わせると、あんたのせいで、赤ん坊が血栓症になっちまう、と言う」と訳しています。この文章の構文となぜそういう訳になるのか解説お願いしたいです。 ⇒いただいたヒント「コンマが不必要に入っていたり、逆に必要なのに入っていなかったりしていた」で、我に返りました。「形式にこだわりすぎていた」と思いました。それで、次のような訳に変更させていただきます。 《あの子のせいでオレは血栓症になっちゃうよ、まったくあのガキには参るなあ。》 ところで、だいぶ前ですが、小田島雄司氏の講演を聞いた折に、こんなことを聞きました。《『ハムレット》の有名なセリフ、"To be or not to be, ..." の部分の訳がいまだにはっきりしないのです。これまでは一応「生か死か、…」というところに収まっていますが、私はどうも納得できないところがあり、「このままでいいのか、よくないのか、…」のほうがより適切そうなので、私の訳ではそう訳したいと思っています》。 いやあ、翻訳はむずかしいですね！ 以上、再々伸まで。 追伸 （１）忘れていました。私の英語の背景は、「経験者」と「研究者」の「合いの子」のような、どちらでもないような感じです。要は、「ド素人」です。ただ、好奇心だけがやたらに強い、「ディレッタント」（好事家）という部類かも知れません。時に「浜の真砂は尽きるとも世に《物好き》の種は尽きまじ」などとうそぶいています。 （２）「アメリカのご友人」の判断、私も興味あります。できましたら、あとで聞かせてください。

この文の構造がよく理解できず、和訳もできません。教えてください。 Anybody that's from out in the country , that's used to it being quiet , thinks the noise that they give off is horrendous.

回答ありがとうございます。補足欄で質問するのを忘れてしまいました。 ドイツ語で赤ん坊は中性名詞とのことですが、仮に会話の途中で赤ん坊が女性であることが分ったとしても、赤ん坊を「彼女」とは呼ばずに「it」と呼び続けるのですか？ ドイツ語のことがよく分かりません。素人の質問にお答え下さいますか？

遅くなりました。 最近まで週一でスカイプをやってたのですが、日本語に加えて韓国語まで勉強を始め、毎日々々、日本語と韓国語の勉強に大忙しのようです。つまり、彼女からなかなか返事がもらえなくて遅くなってしまって申し訳ありませんということを言いたいわけです。 あの部分はここにありました。↓ http://esl-bits.net/Novellas.for.ESL.Students/Goodbye.Columbus/13/default.html 例の部分は最後の方にあります。 で、彼女からの返事を以下に貼り付けます。 what book is this from? anyway Thrombosis is a blood clot 血栓 in Japanese. But in this case he is saying that he is an older man 48 with a very young child 3 years old. This is difficult for him. He works and maybe doesn't have any energy when he gets home. Americans often use phrases like--"I was so scared I almost had a heart attack" I can't think of others right now--but he doesn't really have a blood clot. He just feels that having to play with a three year old , having to change what he does for a three year old is overwhelming. And he says "she'll give me thrombosis THAT KID-- so he is talking about the child not about his wife. 私の予想通り、アメリカ人は心臓疾患などを気にかけているようで、このsheはwife ではなくTHAT KID だとわざわざ大文字で書いて来ました。翻訳の大家に惑わされず、自然に受け取るのが正解だったんですね。 Nakay702さんは、訳者の翻訳に疑問があった時、出版社に手紙を書いて直接訳者から返事をもらったとのことですが、その内容は満足出来るものでしたか、自分の思い違いと言うことはありましたか？それらの訳者の名前を知りたいですが、教えて頂けませんか？ ベルギー人神父のグロスター氏が「私は日本人になりたい」という著書に書いていました。彼は漢字昆じりの日本文の書ける人で私などから見ると、一人前の日本語の知識を持っているように見えたのですが、彼自身は謙遜していて「私の日本語の能力はこの程度です」と自身の書いた日本文を掲載していました。 その彼が具体例を上げて、ある日本人の高名な翻訳家の翻訳文を提示していました。日本人は西洋の宗教文化歴史の理解がないためにこのような迷翻訳をすることがしばしばだと。翻訳は暗い闇の中にあると書いてました。英語が出来ても矢張り宗教文化歴史への理解となると、数十年かかっても難しいことだから、正しい原文の意味を日本人が知ることは本当に不可能に近いのだなあと思いました。具体例を上げて説明していたので説得力がありました。 しかし、今回はそんな歴史や宗教の話ではありません。単なる英語に限った話です。まあ、ちょっとアメリカ人の中高年が心臓疾患を気にするという社会風潮を知っておれば理解に役には立つでしょうが、それを知らなくても普通に読めば理解出来る英文です。なのに、佐伯氏はなぜ迷翻訳をしたのでしょう？ ここからは私の得意分野になるのですが、最初彼はプロの翻訳家だし、英語を学び始めた私など彼の言葉は間違いないはずだし"神の言葉"として聞くべきだろうと無意識に思っておりました。しかし、読み進めて行くうちに疑問が出て来ました。フィリップロス自体が非常にムダな文章を、これでもかと羅列する作家ですが、その彼の文章をべたほめし、しかも彼の翻訳した日本文をいくら繰り返し読んでも意味が分からないものが多々ありました。意訳ではないのです。意訳なら意味が分かるはずですが、意味が取れないのです。結局彼自身が意味を理解しないまま直訳したとしか考えらえません。彼はロスがユダヤ社会を生き生きと描写していると書評で書き(生き生きどころかゴテゴテ描写なんですが)、他忘れましたが、兎に角1から百までロスをべた褒めしています。短編に類まれなる能力を発揮したロスは、その後の長編でもいかんなく能力を発揮しているから是非彼の長編も読むことをすすめるとのことでした。 この後読んでいる常盤新平氏訳のアーウィンショーですが、彼はショーに魅かれ彼の翻訳を手掛けたが「ショーは短編の作家だ」と言い切っています。つまり長編は魅力と価値がないと暗に言ってます。彼のように客観的な覚めた目を持ってる翻訳家が信頼できますね。アーウィンショーと同様、彼の書評と翻訳はすっきりしています。ロスの英文が無茶苦茶ゴテゴテとしていたように佐伯氏の書評も美辞麗句が満載で非常にゴテゴテしていました。これぞ、文芸評論家の書評だ、と思いました。 芥川龍之介でしたか、小説家は数学が出来ないと務まらないとか言いましたが、佐伯氏は恐らく数学が出来ない文芸家なんではないでしょうか？ 訳もいい加減、書評も的を得ず美辞麗句ばかり。今回彼の訳に接して私の中で、彼の評価が下がりました。 ロスはアメリカでは高評価の確立した作家のようですが、アメリカ人自体のレベルを考える必要があるようです。村上春樹が全世界的に人気があるからと言ってそれが彼の小説の価値を証明しないのと同じです。 Nakay702さんはノーベル文学賞を取った作家の文学は全て素晴らしいと思っておられますか？川端康成に関しては具体例を上げて私も指摘できますが、ヘミングウェイなどは米国内でも昔から結構批判者がいるのですね。 要らぬことまで書き綴ってしまいましたが、佐伯氏の訳が発端でこれほどの時間と労力を使う羽目になってしまいましたので彼を批判したくなったのすね。 私もコツコツと英文を読み続けて行きたいと思います。モームとロバートリンドなどに憧れてるんですけどね。 ありがとうございました。
