(1) The kid's a baby, for God's sake, she thinks that's the way I'm supposed to smell. 「あの子はまだ赤ん坊だというのに冗談じゃない。あの子からしてみれば、俺が酒くさいのはごく自然のことと捉えているだろうに。」 になると思います。ここで "she" は「赤ん坊」のことを言っており「女房」のことではないと思います。 (2) She'll give me a thrombosis that kid. 「あの子の所為でいずれ俺は血栓症になっちまうだろう。」 この一文だけから判断すると、上のようになると思います。どうみても「赤ん坊が血栓症になっちまう」という解釈は成り立たないように思います。

この文の構造がよく理解できず、和訳もできません。教えてください。 Anybody that's from out in the country , that's used to it being quiet , thinks the noise that they give off is horrendous.

回答ありがとうございます。 そう言えば、彼の子供は３才の女児でした。sheを女房ではなく子供だとすると全てが理解出来ます。翻訳者の翻訳を元に、あれやこれやと考えた時間が全く無駄でした。翻訳者は佐伯彰一氏で日本のアメリカ文学者、東京大学名誉教授、比較文学研究者、文芸評論家。 日本では相当の人物の様ですので、ツイ私も彼の翻訳は間違っているわけがないと無意識に信じていました。ところが、彼の翻訳した日本文自体が何回読み返しても理解出来ない部分が多々ありました。彼自身が著者の文の意味を理解せずにそのまま日本文に直しているからでしょう。 彼がこの二か所ともsheを女房としていますので、この英文との整合性を考えて四苦八苦しましたが分かりませんでした。 実は別の質問でも、私の理解と彼の理解が違うので、質問に出したのですが、彼の翻訳のいい加減さを考えると私の理解が正解の様です。回答者さんが二人とも翻訳者の理解が間違っていると指摘しています。 彼はヘミングウェイが好きらしく、ヘミングウェイの翻訳もしていますが、この分だと彼の翻訳は相当用心して読まないといけないなと思いました。 しかし、ここで回答する回答者さんたちは皆、真摯に正確に解釈される人が圧倒的に多いように見受けるのですが、プロの翻訳家が意訳どころか全くトンチンカンな翻訳をして本にまでしているというのはおかしなことですね。 トンチンカンな翻訳でも日本文しか読まない読者にはそれが分からないから、通ってしまうんですね。 この点に関して、cbm51901さんにコメントがあればお聞きしたいです。 なければ勿論結構です。 間違った翻訳を元にあれやこれやと考えて時間を空費したのが勿体ないです。
