興味あるご質問をありがとうございます。 以下のとおりお答えします。 ＞上記でshe thinks that's the way I'm supposed to smellを訳者の佐伯彰一氏は「ところが、女房のやつ、わしが酒くさいと、決めこんどる」と意訳しています。 ＞どうしてそういう訳になるのでしょうか？ ⇒私は、そういう訳にはならないと思います。 すでにご指摘があるように、このsheは「女房」のことでなく、「子ども」のことを指していると思います。訳はこんな感じです。 《子どもは（まだ）赤ん坊だよ、頼むよ、この匂いだから赤ん坊がオレだと思ってくれるんじゃないか。》 ＞She'll give me a thrombosis that kid. を佐伯氏は「女房に言わせると、あんたのせいで、赤ん坊が血栓症になっちまう、と言う」と訳しています。この文章の構文となぜそういう訳になるのか解説お願いしたいです。 ⇒長いこと悩みました。 Sheは誰なのか。a thrombosis that kidはどう考え、どう分析すればいいのか。この語句のあとMy wife, she wants me to ～と続くのはなぜか、どういうつながりになるのか…などです。 そこで、私の解釈はこうです。このSheは、訳者の見立てたとおり「女房」で、She'll give me a thrombosis that kid.を構造解析すると、SVOC（第5文型）と考えることができると思います。すなわち、こんな感じです。 S(she)+V(will give) +IO(me)+DO(that kid) +C(a thrombosis) 《女房のやつ、オレの子を血栓症にでもする気なんだよ。》 ☆私はず～っと「酒」と「血栓症」を関連づけて考えていましたが、実は、そうではなくて《子どもに近寄らず、一緒に遊んだりせず、じっとさせておくことで「血栓症（＝エコノミークラス症候群）にさせてしまう」ということを言っている》のだと思います。 ☆give meのmeは「オレに」というより、「オレにとって、オレの害になるのに」といったニュアンスだと思います。間接目的の、この（利害の対象を示す）用法は他のヨーロッパ語ではかなり一般的で、これを「心性与格」と呼んでいます。 ☆上で、構文をSVOC（第5文型）と分析しましたが、SVOO（第４文型）と考えることもできるかも知れません。すなわち、こうです。 S(she)+V(will give) +IO(me)+DO(a thrombosis・that kid) 《女房のやつ、血栓症の子にでもする気なんだよ。》 この場合、直接目的のa thrombosisとthat kidは、いわゆる「同格」と見なすことになります。ただし訳は上のように「血栓症の子ども」としていいと思います。 ☆My wife, she wants me to come home early ～と続くのは、「（子どもを血栓症にしたくなかったら）もっと早く帰っておいで…」といった感じでしょう。そういうつながりになるのではないかと思いました。 以上、不十分ながらご回答まで。

回答ありがとうございます。 長いこと悩ませて申し訳ありません。 私は英文を正確に読む専門家ではありませんが、諸事情を総合的に考える能力はあると思っています。 このフィリップロスのさようならコランバスが出版されたのは1959年。小説に描写されている世界は１９５０年代後半かと思います。その時既にアメリカでは飛行機で移動するのが一般的になっていたのでしょうか？エコノミー症候群というのは一般の人が普通に飛行機で行き来する時代になってから一般的に認識された症状だと思います。私はむしろ、エコノミー症候群(深部静脈血栓症)よりも動脈血栓症で心筋梗塞や脳梗塞を引き起こす血栓症が成人病として恐れられていたのではないかと思います。赤ん坊と血栓症との結び付きは聞いたことがありませんし、実際にもそのような症例はないと思います。従って赤ん坊と血栓症を結び付けるのは不自然に思います。 成人病としての血栓症が引き起こす心筋梗塞などは昔から欧米では死因のトップだったと思いますし、この点には神経をとがらせていたと思います。 そして実は、現代医学では血栓の原因のトップはストレスとも言われており、ストレスを気にするアメリカ人がストレスが成人病の原因であると１９５０年代に信じ込んでいたと推測します。彼は仕事にストレスを抱えており(ストレスと言う単語は出て来ませんが)仕事が終わると、家に戻るまでにマルチニをひっかけずにはおれない。これが彼の唯一の楽しみでありストレス発散法なのだが、それに妻が文句をつける。早く帰って来て子供と遊べと要求する。バーには女の子もいて楽しい。女房の言うことを聞いて、毎日早く帰って子供の遊びの相手などさせられては、ストレスで血栓症になってしまうよ、と解釈したいですね。 はっきりと調べたわけではないのですが、当時エコノミー症候群が一般的な認識であったとは思えないのと、赤ん坊と血栓症はどうしても結び付かないのと、中年男の成人病と血栓症は容易に結び付くの3点でsheは赤ん坊で血栓症の被害者は喋っている本人の亭主だと思います。 とは言っても絶対的な確信はありません。
