Mad or predcient? That idea is in fact close to Jone's vision. “If we succeed in our mission,” she says. “cryonics will become a process carried out in hospitals by medical staff for much shorter times.” That in itself is a change from the early days, when cryonicists more often aspired to immortality, not just more life. In addition, the demographics are changing. Formerly, most cronicists were young, male and geeky. now, Alcor gets whole families. The important unknown is: Can a cryosuspended brain, warmed and revived, retain the memories and personality of its owner? Until this is proven―in a dog, if not a human―cryonicists don't know if they're mad or prescient. How long before we know? Best says: “I think within 30 years we'll see a successful revival, but the people revival then would be cryopreserved 30 years from now.” Last in, first out: the earliest patients to be cryopreserved suffered the worst damege. James Bedford, who in 1967 became the first person ever to be cryonically suspended and who is now at Alcor, was barely perfused at all. “For the people being cryopreserved now, under the best conditions, my guess is 50 to 100 years.” Given the current rate of medical progress and research into nanotechnology, says Jones: “If we haven't done it in 100 years, it's not going to work.”

The scientists also suggest that wealthier individuals in the United States tend to be more informed about skin cancer, and have better access to health care. If the increase in cases is a by-product of medical advances, then most newly diagnosed melanoma patients should come from wealthier social groups, they reasoned. When the authors compared the number of melanomas reported in the periods 1988-1992 and 1998-2002, they found that incidence doubled for all socioeconomic groups over the 10-year period separating these two data sets. These two findings together show that the rise in cases of melanoma is real, and not only attributable to improved screening, says Linos. "I am not really surprised by these findings," says cancer epidemiologist Jan Willem Coebergh of the Erasmus University Medical Centre in Rotterdam, The Netherlands. Whereas the debate may continue in the United States, most European researchers have already agreed that there is a genuine rise in cases, he says. He adds, however, that "it is not ever possible to completely resolve the debate" as improved screening probably also plays a part. Linos proposes that there are several reasons for the increased risk. "Over the past 100 years, people are really changing the amount of time they spend in the sun, the clothes they wear, and whether their hobbies and work are indoor or outdoor," she says. Other causes may include a thinning of the ozone layer, resulting in increased exposure to ultraviolet light, or a longer-term increase in the genetic susceptibility to cancer, she adds. For now, Linos says, the best way to reduce the risks from melanoma is to wear sunscreen, cover up, and catch tumours early: "Greater awareness that this is a growing issue is the key."

This can be difficult when teachers and students do not have access to the Internet, but the core skills can be practiced in classrooms without technology. One of the most important skills we must now learn is collaboration, and this can be practiced on a chalkboard, whiteboard, or even a simple piece of paper. We can learn to listen to one another, use each other's strengths, and practiced working together in any environment.

Synthetic biology is in fact the name now used for a cluster of new technologies in which, as John McCarthy, the computer scientist, says, biomolecular components (natural or synthetic) are newly combined or reorganised to create novel genetic and biochemical circuitry, pathways, and ultimately organisms. It is, in a sense, a hybrid discipline between science and engineering. Synthetic biology has caugh the imagination not least because it makes the beginnings of potentially manufacturing life forms from scratch and eventually of creating tailor-made creatures in our own image-or in principle in the image of anything we can engineer. This is heady stuff, and if it works may give us un precedented powers. If we can try to understand how to make better creatures than ourselves, longer-lived, more resistant to disease and injury, healthier and better adapted to a changing environment, we should surely do so.

-Ageing- As we've seen, many people live healthy, happy and productive lives for many years after the standard retirement age. But sooner or later, barring accidents, we all become old. It used to be thought that ageing was a steady decline in functioning, with people going inevitably downhill from the age of 50 or so. But now we know that is not so. But now we know that is not so. The research evidence which suggested this pattern of ageing was seriously flawed in the way that it was done, and modern experiences show that ageing occurs quite differently. The general pattern seems to be that we have only a very gradual decline in our older years, and that decline can be slowed down by exercise and activity, but that eventually we reach a period of more rapid physical decline, which rarely lasts for more than about five years. Usually, the person dies at some point during the five-year period. In some old people, that decline is brought about by an accident-a fall or some similar event- which damages them physically but, more importantly, shakes their confidence and makes them feel unable to cope with life as they once did. How inevitable the decline is, once it has begun, is something nobady knows. We do know, though, that even old bodies can respond surprisingly well to exercises were found to be putting on muscle mass as a result - in other words, their muscles were responding to the exercise and becoming stronger. This finding has been repeated a number of times now, and it shows that the saying " it's never too late " may be even truer than we realize. The real danger in ageing, more than any other, seems to be the person's own beliefs about it. Someone who expects to decline and become incapable as they grow older is not likely to face their body or mind with extra challenges. Without exercise, our bodies have no incentive to grow stronger or to maintain their normal levels of strength; so they become weaker. This, to the person who expects to be weak as a result of age, is 'proof 'that they were right, and their belief in inevitable decline is confirmed. But really, it began as a self-fulfilling prophecy.

There are at least two biotechnological was to revive a mammoth. One is to clone it. Dr. Ian Wilmut developed this method at a research center in Scotland. He is well knownas the man the man who cloned "Dolly" the sheep. The other is to use frozen mammoth sperm to fertilize the egg of an Asian elephant. "There's a chance we can get frozen sperm from a mammoth," says Larry Agenbroad, a specialist in biotechnology. There is only a slight difference in DNA between the mammoth and the Asian elephant. So, if we fertilize the Asian elephant egg with mammoth sperm, we can, in theory, produce a young animal. It will be half-mammoth and half-elephant. Repeating this kind of fertilization again and again, we'll be able to produce an animal very close to a mammoth in the end.

Chance meetings are all around us. New and interesting people and great opportunities are dished up to us daily if we’re willing to sport them and seize them. Don’t be someone who sits on the sidelines and says, “I never seem to meet anyone interesting.” If that’s you, then it’s time to try a little harder. The opportunities are there; you’re just not tuning in to them. Whatever it is you want to succeed in, achieve or communicate to the world, chance meetings can be a valuable tool to help get you there. Whatever it is you want to succeed in, achieve or communicate to the world, chance meetings can be a valuable tool to help get you there.

Welcome to your future life! You get up in the morning and look into the mirror. Your face is firm and young-looking. In 2035, medical science is better than ever. Many people your age could live to be 150, so at 40, you're not old at all. And your parents just had an anti-aging nanotechnology treatment. Now, all three of you look the same age!

We cannot, we must not, refuse to protect the right of every American to vote in every election that he may desire to participate in.And we ought not, and we cannot, and we must not wait another eight months before we get a bill. We have already waited 100 years and more and the time for waiting is gone. So I ask you to join me in working long hours and nights and weekends, if necessary, to pass this bill. And I don't make that request lightly, for, from the window where I sit, with the problems of our country, I recognize that from outside this chamber is the outraged conscience of a nation, the grave concern of many nations and the harsh judgment of history on our acts.

和訳お願いしますm(__)m ladies and Gentlemen: Dream analysis is the central problem of the analytical treatment, because it is the most important technical means of opening up an avenue to the unconscious. The main object in this treatment, as you know, is to get at the message of the unconscious. The patient comes to the analyst usually because he finds himself in an impasse or cul-de-sac,where there seems to be no way out,and he assumes that the doctor will know a way. If the doctor is honest,he recognizes that he also does not know the way. But doctors sometimes are not:only one hundred and fifty years ago, doctors were those quacks who went to fairs and pulled out teeth, performed marvellous cures, etc. ,and this attitude still prevails to a certain extent in the medical profession at the present day---human beings are everywhere bad! In analysis we must be very careful not to assume that we know all about the patient or that we know the way out of his difficulties. If the doctor tells him what he thinks the trouble may be,he follows the doctor's suggestions and does not experience himself. Suggestions may work for a time, but when he is away the patient collapses because he has no contact with himself and is living not his own way but the doctor's way. Then he has to return to the doctor for new suggestions, and after a while this becomes disgusting to both. It is important that the doctor admits he does not know;then both are ready to accept the impartial facts of nature, scientific realities. Personal opinions are more or less arbitrary judgments and may be all wrong; we are never sure of being right. Therefore we should seek the facts provided by dreams. Dreams are objective facts. They do not answer our expectations, and we have not invented them;if one intends to dream of certain things, one finds it impossible. We dream of our questions, our difficulties. There is a saying.

When we are employed in reading a great and good author,we ought to consider ourselves as searching after treasures, which,if well and regular laid up in the mind, will be of use to us on various occasions in our lives. He was old enough, twelve years and a few months,to have lost the prominent belly of childhood; and not yet old enough for adolescence to have made him awkward. You could see now that he might make a boxer,as far as width and heaviness of shoulder went, but there was a mildness about his mouth and eyes that proclaimed no devil.
