Ben was making coffee for me then. My mother was reading a magazine at that time.

My mother (watch) TV when I came home.

She had tried to conceive a baby for many years, but she ended up miscarrying every time. She was on the verge of giving up on becoming a mother. After all, it seemed pretty obvious that her dreams of having children had been crushed. Then a miracle happened.

- by the time の意味のとり方
By the time, by then 文 By the time I got to the party, most of the other guests had left. (1) I had a lot of work to do last night. I was very tired by the time I finished. (2) By the time I finished my work, it was too late to go shopping.
