Thenとat that timeの違い
Ben was making coffee for me then. (ベンはその時、私のためにコーヒーを作っていました。） My mother was reading a magazine at that time. (私の母は、そのとき 雑誌を読んでいました。） 上記の2つの文の『その時』の表し方が「then」「at that time」と違うのはどうしてなんでしょうか？ 教えて下さい。お願いします。

どちらでもいいです。 同じ意味です。 他にも、「その時」で辞書を引くと[on that occasion]というのも出てきますが、よく使われるのはthenかat that timeでしょうね。 好きな方を使っていいと思いますよ。

中学生の英語の問題集にあった文からです。 「私はあの時英語を勉強していました。」という文を英作する問題で 「I (study) English at that time.」のstudyを適切な形に直す問題でした。 問題はこの問題の正解ではなく(駄洒落のつもりではありませんが）、“at that time”の部分です。この問題の日本語の文ではコンテクストも何もないので はっきりしたことは言えませんが、「あの時」というのは、普通のシチュエーションでは 本日中かせいぜい1週間以内に1,2時間継続して勉強していた場合が多いと思うんです。しかし、at that timeを使うと「あの時」というよりは「あの頃」というように、何年か前の一定期間か、少なくとも1年間位のあいだの1時期を指すと思うので、at that momentの方が当てはまるような気がします。この点についてどう思われますか？英語に堪能な方、回答をお待ちしております。

By the time I got to the party, most of the other guests had left. のようにby the time文より、後の文はもひとつ過去になるので had+ part participleになるのはわかるのですが、 I had a lot of work to do last night. I was very tired by the time I finished. By the time I finished my work, it was too late to go shopping. などは、 どのように考えればいいのでしょうか? by the timeの文と同時刻の出来事と考えてよいから同じ時制になるのでしょうか？ また by the time と by that time (by then）に感覚の違いはあるのでしょうか？ 例文を見てもよくわかりません。 よろしくお願いいたします。

He told me that that that that that boy said at that time is that that. 友人に出された問題なのですが、どう訳したらいいのでしょうか。関係代名詞を駆使してthatをできるだけたくさんならべた文章だそうですが。 そもそもこんな文章ありえるのでしょうか。 わけが分からなくなってしまいました。

There's been a lot of times though in the band situation where there's been some deep wounds. Like that press conference they put together in 1996, after canceling three shows. The same stuff was going on with certain members of the band, that I was doing at that time. That was that time, I'm not making an excuse for it, it was a horrible time in my life. As well there were a lot of great things going on in my life, but that part of it was miserable. But I don't think at all that there needed to be a press conference to out me publicly, that was my own business.

こんばんは。 thisだったら大体「これ」とか「この」とかになるかと思うのですが、 thatの時は「あれ」「あの」になるときと「それ」「その」になるときがあって間違ってしまいます。 itは「それ」「その」ですよね。（そのだったらits？ですよね・・） thatのときの「それ」「その」ってどう違いますか？ 今見ていた文は We couldnt help giving up the plan at that time. で、答えではthat timeが「その時」になっていて、計画はその（the)も付いていなくて「計画」になっていました。 thatが、「あれ」になるときと「それ」になるときの違いを教えてください。 よろしくお願いします。

I’ve been a really bad friend. Last year, I was in a bad living situation. My best friend owns several properties and helped me out; he asked a long-term tenant to leave, refurbished the whole apartment, and then offered it to me at a steep discount so I could afford it. It’s literally the most beautiful, spacious place I have ever lived in. This coincided with a very intense romantic relationship I was caught up in—which, of course, broke up spectacularly when he stole my stuff and left the country. I realize now that I was really thoughtless. My friend did a lot of the renovations himself and spent thousands of dollars on necessary (but much-appreciated) upgrades. At the time, I was so focused on my relationship that I didn’t even think about pitching in. And now, looking back, I didn’t show up once to clean or paint, or even just bring dinner and say thank you. Don’t get me wrong, I’ve tried to be a good tenant and show my gratitude. He’s never said anything about it, and I don’t think he holds it against me. It’s more that I realized I really dropped the ball. It’s more thatはどのような意味でしょうか？よろしくお願いします
