意味とthatの用法について教えて下さい。

この that は関係副詞であり，the time という先行詞を that he was dismissed from the hospital が修飾しています。この that は when に置き換えることができ，the time that he was dismissed from the hospital では「彼が病院から解雇された時」という意味になります。

#1さんの回答への蛇足です。 he was dismissed from the hospitalは「彼が病院を退院したとき」という意味だと思います。「彼」は患者のようですから。

that which は辞書を見ると、「～するもの（こと）」と訳され、whatと近い意味とありますが、 The time that which he needed to finish his project was given to him last week. 「プロジェクトを終わらせるために彼が必要だった時間は先週与えられた」というふうに訳しました。 そうすると、that whichではなく、thatでも同じ訳になるのでは？と疑問になりました。 どうしてwhatと近い意味になるのでしょうか？
