端的に言ってこれは文法の問題というよりも、会計基準・報告基準の形式の問題といった方が良いかもしれません。 確かにこれまでは、"the period (year) ending XXXX" という表現が一般であったと思います。しかし一方で、"the period (year) ended XXXX" という表現を使用していた企業もあったと記憶しております。 ではどちらが正しいのか？ どちらも正しいと思います。しかし少し調べてみたのですが、将来的には "the peirod ended XXXX" の方が主流になるのではと思います。というのも、IFRS（International Financial Reporting Standards = 国際会計財務報告基準） が推奨している表記は、"Financial Statements for the year ended 31 December 2013" という風になっているからです。 [ご参考] http://www.iasplus.com/en/publications/global/models-checklists/2013/ifrs-mfs-2013 上のリンクは四大会計事務所の一つ、デロイト トウシュ トーマツ のウェブサイトから拾ったものですが、もう一つの四大会計事務所、KPMG のウェブサイトでも、財務諸表の表記例としてやはり、"for the year ended XXXX" が採用されています。 [ご参考] http://www.kpmg.com/Global/en/IssuesAndInsights/ArticlesPublications/IFRS-illustrative-financial-statements/Documents/IFRS-illustrative-financial-statements-2012.pdf (p13、p17、p21参照） ですので、ended vs ending は、文法で納得するというよりは、会計慣習・慣例上の問題だと捉えた方が良いでしょう。

ended が使われるというのであれば 自動詞で完了を表すってことでしょうね。 分詞構文でいくと Arrived at ～, で完了的な（過去分詞の）分詞構文 とにかく，過去形でなく過去分詞

「期日が終わる」というのは事実なので taht ends と現在形にしましたが， 終わった日というので that ended と過去形にしてもいいでしょう。 でも，#1 の方のおっしゃるように，過去形でいきなり修飾できず （もちろん現在形でも），主格の関係代名詞が必要です。 分詞による名詞の修飾というのは主格的で，関係詞なく修飾できます。 ended だと過去分詞による修飾で使えますが，ふつう，受身的意味になります。 ここでは「期日が終わる（終わった）」という自動詞で，受身になりません。 完了の意味で過去分詞を使うこともありますが，多様すべきものではありません。 fallen leaves「落ち葉」など限られた場面で使います。

文というより，タイトル的なので report に冠詞がない，ということでよろしいでしょうか。 あと，普通，日付の前に on がつきますが， これも省略されることがあります。 31st March というのはイギリス（ヨーロッパ）式です。 アメリカなら March 31st あと，2013の前にコンマが必要。 問題の ending ですが， period that/which ends on ～ としても同じです。 こういう主格＋現在形（過去形） を ing で書き換えることがあります。 boy running over there ＝ boy who is running over there というふうに，こういう ing は進行形で書き換えることが多いです。 しかし， friend who lives in Tokyo ＝friend living in Tokyo というふうに進行形とは限りません。 live なら進行形になりにくい，でまだ納得いくかもしれません。 end の場合も進行形にはなり得ても「期日が～で終わる」 という意味の場合，普通には進行形にしません。 period that ends on ～と進行形にしない。 でも period ending on ～と ing を使うことができます。 分詞によって名詞を修飾できる という観点だけです。 こういう進行形とは限らない，という観点でこの ing による名詞修飾をとらえるのは ある程度の習熟が必要です。

教科書の一文です。 On March 12, WHO put the whole world on alert, the first time it had ever done so since its foundation. この２行目のthe first time it had ever done so の部分の構造がわかりません。 意味は「WHOは３月１２日に世界に警戒を呼びかけた。それは設立以来初めてのことだった。」ということはわかるのですが。。 On March 12, WHO put the whole world on alert, which was the first time that it did so since its foundation. とはならないのでしょうか？ どなたか教えてください。
