こんにちは。 以下の英文について分からない部分があるので質問させてください。 "He had lost both his wife and daughter in the space of a few weeks to the then unknown virus." この文の”a few weeks to the then unknown virus”についてですがthe thenは「当時の」という意味だと思うのですがその前の"to"が何を意味しているのか分からないので解説していただけるとありがたいです。よろしくお願いします。

「lose (A) to (B)」というイディオムと覚えられたらよいかと思います。 (A)を(B)に明け渡す［取られる］ ・I lost my husband to the cancer.「夫を癌で亡くした。」 ・I've lost my heart to the girl.「私はその少女に恋をした。（ハートを奪われた）」 などの文があります。 He had lost both his wife and daughter (in the space of a few weeks) to the then unknown virus. 「彼は、２,３週間の間に、当時、正体のわかっていなかったウィルスで、妻と娘をなくした。」 ** in the space of a few weeks ＝during a peiod of a few weeks ＝in a few weeks（２,３週間経過して）

「彼は、当時知られていなかったウィルスによって、妻と娘を数週間の間に失った。」 "He had lost both his wife and daughter [in the space of a few weeks] to the [then unknown] virus. [ ]の部分を飛ばして読めば、"to" が何を意味しているか判ると思います。 つまり、ウィルス "によって" 妻と娘を失った、ということです。

Old Fred Ford had gone to live with his daughter, Kate, and her family shortly after his wife, Mary died. （センター９８本試験） という文章の「had gone to live」の訳がどうも引っかかります。 赤本には、「フレッド=フォード老人は妻のメアリーが亡くなってまもなく、娘のケイトおよびその家族と一緒に暮らすようになっていた。」 というように「暮らすようになっていた」とありますが、なぜこうなるのかイマイチよく分かりません。文法的に、語法的に詳しく説明してくださる方はいらっしゃいますでしょうか？ （推測では、goの意味（もしくはgone?）が「行く」という意味よりもむしろ、「なる」的な意味があるのではと睨んでいます。ただ、go to do~のdoが「なる」という意味が存在することは全く知りません。 それかただ単に、「住みに行ってしまった」でいいのでしょうか？でも何か変ですよね。） よろしくお願い致します。
