「それとは違った物事の手筈」ではなくて、「いつもと違った物事の手筈」ではないでしょうか。

僕の見当ですが、ポート・モレスビーに向けて７機で出かける時は、変ったことなかろうと高をくくって坂井は、米川に編隊長の位置を飛ばせる。 ところが予期に反して圧倒的多数の敵機の待ち伏せに遭う（何しろ暗号筒抜けなんですから）、で、「こいつは仕舞った、いつもの通りに（＝俺が先頭を飛ぶいつもの通りにに）しとけばよかった」と坂井は思った、ということじゃいないでしょうか。 「その日どんな運命が我々を待ち受けているか知っていたら、（いつもと）違った取り決めをするんじゃなかった（＝米川に編隊長の座を飛ばせるんじゃなかった）」 僕の憶測に過ぎませんが、、、

「大空のサムライSAMURAI！」を一通り読んたのですが・・・。 文中に、 My mother stilled my fears with assurance that the entire village had heped her in her labors, that our neighors could not have been kinder. という文の訳の後半がよくわかりません。 前後からから考えると、 「私の母は、村全部の人たちが彼女の労働を助けてくれた。まして近所の人たちがもっと親切でなかろうはずはないといって、私の心配をなだめてくれた。」 に近い訳になると想うのですが、 that our neighors could not have been kinder だけをとってみると、 近所の人たちは、もっと親切であったことはありえない。」のような訳になってしまいます。 couldの用法だと思うのですが、どう訳すか教えてください。
