know that ...(knowの命令形)はどう訳すんですか？

　以下はWorld of WarcraftというRPGに出てくる一節です。 　主人公のKenjiはある人に、○○と△△と□□というモンスターを倒してこい、そうすることでお前の実力を示してみろ、と言われます。そして言われた通りに全部倒してくると、同じ人に次のように言われます。 "I am finished with you, Kenji - you have shown yourself to be worthy of the freedom that you have been given. Many will stand against you for what you have become, but know that no matter what they may try to do against us, we are free and will not be shackled again." 　さて、問題の箇所は5行目の"but know that ..."です。knowの命令形は初めて見たんですが、普通に「わかってくれ、知ってくれ」と訳すんでしょうか？ 【私訳】 「ケンジよ、お前を試すのはこれで終わりだ。お前は自分の手にした自由に相応しい者であることを示した。多くの敵が自由になったお前の行く手に立ちはだかるだろう。しかし奴らが我々に何をしようとしても、我々は自由であり二度と束縛されることはないだろう、ということを知ってくれ」。 　明らかに変ですね(笑)。

命令文です． 典型的な単純な例は Know yourself.「おのれを知れ，分を知れ」ですね．オクスフォード辞書には，be aware of (through observation, inquiry, or information)とも書いています．「知っておいてくれ，心に刻んでくれ，しっかり覚えていてくれ，忘れないでくれ」といった訳は可能です．(you) know that という命令形です． なぜ，know の命令形が存在しないなどという説がまかり通っているのですかね．

確かに命令形と考えられる文章が見つかりました！　聖書です。 Psalm 46:10 "Be still, and know that I am God; I will be exalted among the nations, I will be exalted in the earth." 訳：静まって、わたしこそ神であることを知れ これでは皆が使うわけだ！　聖書由来の決まり文句というわけですね。

No.4 です。確かに No. 6 さんのおっしゃるように "I" を意図的に省いた例は気付いてはおりました。つまり "I" を入れるのもかったるいという意図的省略だと思います。例えば "I know" というと "I" 一人だけの意見と言うことになってしまいますが、確信が強いのだから主語は "I" 限定では飽き足らないという気分だと思います。 know で命令というのとは少し変ですから（上記したように必ずしも "I" が最も適切とは言えませんが）やはり隠れた主語があると考えた方がよいと思います。ただ決まり文句のようになっていて、主語なしで通じるようになっているのだと思います。 「非常に確信がある」という意味合いですから、訳は「思うに」ではなくて、「確かに」「絶対に」みたいなニュアンスを挿入すればよいと思います。

　たくさんありますね、knowの命令文。私もたくさん見つけましたよ。 　ここまでで(1)knowは命令形、(2)knowの前にIまたはI and Youが省略されているという説が出てきました。 (1)で訳すと、「しかし、知っておいてくれよ、・・・我々は自由であり二度と束縛を受けないだろう」 となり、 (2)で訳すと、「しかし、私が思うに、・・・だろう」もしくは「しかし、私とお前が思うに、・・・だろう」 になりますね。 　ところで、主人公のケンジについてなんですが、実は上の例文の人に会う少し前まで墓場に安置されている死体でした。それがひょんなことから歩く死体となって蘇り、第２の人生がスタートしたのです。しかし彼は右も左もわかりません。そこに上の例文の人が現れて、彼が新しい人生を自力で進んで行けるかどうか確かめたというわけです。つまりこの人は道しるべみたいな役割ですね。 　こういったことを踏まえると(2)の「私が思うに」では道しるべにしてはちょっと自信なさげ。また、「私とお前が」だと目覚めたばかりの主人公が見通しついてておかしい。 　一方で(1)なら「知っておいてくれよ」実はこういう事実があるんだ、と主人公に教え諭す感じなのでしっくりくる。 　なので、やっぱり(1)knowは命令形が正解である気がします。少なくともこの文では。

すみません，確かに know の命令文というのはないですね。 いわゆる無意志動詞で，一瞬だけ知っているという進行形にもなりにくいし，意志が働かない以上，命令することもできません。 Please remember ～とか Be sure to know ～の方が自然でしょうか。 とすると，# 4 の方のおっしゃるように，主語がすり替ってしまったか，一人称主語を省略したということなのかもしれません。

No. 2です。お説ごもっとも、私もそそっかしく意見を述べていました。補足説明を試みます。 , but の後で全く新しい主語の節が始まるという理解は間違いだと思います。例えば次のような文章があります。主語は but より前のものがそのまま引き継がれています。 I'm a bit complicated to sum up, but know that I'm quite entertaining in real life. さて、本題です。次の例では know の主語が変なことになっていますが、実は but の前の実質主語が "I" なのでそれが引き継がれています。 it is my goal to be an inspiration to any and everyone that makes my acquaintance, but know that I am only human and ... but の前の文章が長いと文法上の主語を持って来るより（あるいは前の文章の文法上の主語などは忘れてしまって）、本来 "I" の意見なのだという「実質主語」を but の後ろに（頭の中で持って来て）想定しているのだと考えられます。 今の場合 Many will stand against you for what you have become, but know that... では素直に読めば No.2 のように many will know と考えられますが、しかし確かにその後の文章まで読むとそれでは筋が通らない。これはいつの間にか筆者の頭の中で「実質主語」が "I" (あるいは we = I and you かも知れません) に変わったのだと理解されます。 Many will stand against you for what you have become, but I know that... know を命令形と理解するのはやはり変だと思います。いかがでしょうか。

すみません、どうやらコンマの有無については、原則として接続詞の前にはコンマを付けなければならないが、文章が短いときは省略されがちなだけだそうです。 　とすると、Iが省略されているという説で行くなら、knowは「しかし、思うに・・・」と挿入して訳すか全く訳さないのがいいんでしょうか？うまい訳が思いつきません。

一瞬（いやそれ以上），but の後に主語が省略されていると思いましたが，many はここでは漠然と「多くのこと」のような意味で，know の主語ではないですね。 ご試訳の通りでほぼいいと思います。 ただ，know は「知る」でなく，「知っている」だという基本はご存じだと思います。 したがって，「～だと承知しておきなさい，覚えておきなさい」くらいの感覚でいいのではないでしょうか。

　やっぱりそんな感じの意味でしたか。 　あとは、knowを文末ではなく「しかし、いいか覚えておけよ、奴らが我々に向かって何をしようとしても・・・」みたいに挿入しちゃったほうが自然でいいかもしれませんね。 　回答ありがとうございました。

Many will know とかかっています。命令形ではありません。（この程度でひっかかる(?)ようではモンスターを倒したKenjiのレベルではありませんね！）

　ケンジさんも実は最初そう思ったらしいんですが、文法的な問題としてbutの前に","がある場合はカンマの前にあった主語はbutの後に省略されておらず、全く新しい主語の節が始まるんですよ。まあ、上の例だと命令形だから主語はないんですがね。
