＃５です。 ＞「写真で見ると醜いとは思えないな。けれども、わりと美しいよ。」 ＞これはあっていると思います。どうして間違っていると言えるのでしょうか？ う。そういうご質問でしたか。 「ＡけれどもＢ」＝「Ａ however Ｂ」 この場合、ＡとＢとでは「主張したいこと」が反対同士、もしくは全然会計ないことである必要があります。 例文の場合、Ａの部分では「写真に写っているものは醜くない」と主張していますよね。つまり、写真に写っているものは可愛いかもしれないし、整っているかもしれないし、こぎれいかもしれない。でも写真に写っているものが不細工だったり、汚かったり、パッとしない、ということはあり得ないのです。 なので「けれども／however」でつなげる場合、Ｂの部分では、Ａの反対に当たる主張、つまり「写真に写っているものは醜い」という類いの主張をする必要があります。例えば「被写体は醜くない。けれども被写体は人を不快にする」とかね。でなければ全然関係ない、例えば、「写真に写っているものは小さい」とか「大きい」とか、醜さと関係ないことを主張する必要があります。「被写体は醜くない。けれども被写体は小さすぎる」とかね。 ですが、例文のＢの部分では「写真に写っているものは美しい」と主張しています。「醜くない」と「美しい」って相反することではありませんよね。だから「けれども／however」は使えないのです。以上が「けれども／however」の説明。 *** さて、一応、「on the contrary」も説明しておきます。 「ＡそれどころかＢ」＝「Ａ on the contrary Ｂ」です。 ただし、この場合のＡとＢは反対同士の主張をするのではありません。 例文の場合は、「ugly（醜い）どころかbeautiful（美しい）」と言っていますよね。つまり厳密に言うと「正反対ならon the contrary（それどころか）」なのではなく、「Ａ全体ではなく、Ａの中の“一部分”とＢが正反対ならon the contrary（それどころか）」なわけで、「on the contrary（それどろか）」はＡの主張に賛成して、さらにＡの主張を強めて言う場合に使います。 つまり例文を噛み砕いて言うとこういうことになります。「写真に写っているものが“醜い”って？ “醜い”なんてことはないさ。“醜い”どころか、“醜い”の正反対、つまり“美しい”よ」と言っているわけです。 こういうものは、「どこそこに否定形がきたら、なんたらかんたら」というふうに機械的に覚えていると、かえって話がややこしくなります。そうではなくて、「写真に写っているものは私には醜くは見えない」という状態がどういうことなのかを自分の中で思い描き、「ああ、この人は写真を見ていて、被写体は、きっとこんな感じかなあ」と、その世界にある程度入り込んだほうが分かりやすいのかもしれませんね。

Dear Sugars, I remember reading, at some point, that you should be willing to give any money you lend to friends and family as a gift if you want to maintain that friendship or relationship. I get this. I've lived by it for a long time. However, I went against my better judgment and lent a friend a lot of money. She said she would pay me back quickly, but now it's been almost a year. I never imagined that she would avoid the topic the way she has, but after I lent her the money, she never mentioned it again. My heart hurts when I think about it. If it were a few hundred dollars I would feel OK with the gift, but this is a big amount of money.
