指を交差させることの意味
Jean-Michelが9ヶ月失業していて、ようやく自分の望みに適った職を見つけオンラインで申し込み、妻のClaudeの帰りを待っている場面の会話です。 Jean-Michel waits impatiently for Claude to return so that he can share the good news. She gets back at around 6 pm and, exhauted after her long day, collapses into an armchair. Claude: Phew, I'm whacked! What did you get up to today? Jean-Michel: Guess? I found a job offer that seems perfect for me and I sent off an application. Let's keep our fingers crossed. そこで質問ですが、“What did you get up to today?”は「今日はどうだった？」くらいの意味だと思うんですが、 get up to というのは イディオムでしょうか？ それから、最後の“ Let's keep our fingers crossed.” の部分で、指を交差させることの意味がよく分かりません。ただ、これは あとは結果を待つしかないような状況だというのは察せますが。 以上、よろしくお願いします。

Gです。 簡単に書きますね。 get up toと言う表現には二つの使い方があります。 ひとつはget / up to程度・量で達する、近づくと言う意味です。 もうひとつは今回使われたように、doを意味します。 聴いたことがある例としてWhat are you up to?と言うのをご存知ですね。 その表現に良く似たフィーリングを持った表現がget up toなのです。 つまり、What did you get up to today?と言う表現をして、What did you do today?と同じフィーリングを出すことが出来るのです。 一般的ではないかもしれませんが、使われる表現です。 これでいかがでしょうか。 分かりにくい点がありましたら、補足質問してください。

人差し指に中指を重ねるのは十字架を象徴し、魔よけや幸運を祈るしるしです。この場合はいい結果が出るように祈っているんだと思います。

get up toは、そうですね、idiomです。 達するや近づくなどの意味があります。 指を交差させることは、good luckと同じ意味合いです。 人差し指の上に、中指を巻きつけるように交差させ、 試験前などに成功を祈るという意味でよく使います。

完全に蛇足（この場面とは関係ない）ですが。 指をクロスさせるのは、兵士などが捕虜になった時のために使われるサインでもあります。「私は強制されています」というサインです。 参考URLでは、兵士がヒラリー・クリントンとにこやかに握手しています。（笑

こんにちは。 "What did you get up to today?" は、今日は何処まで進んだ？というような意味。 "Let's keep our finger crossed." は、結果を祈りましょうと言うような意味。十字架から来ているんだと。実際私たちはみんなテストが帰ってくる前は指をクロスさせてます。（笑）両手の中指を人差し指の上にくぐらせます。

英語圏において、指を交差するとは、親指を立てる事とほぼ同じ意味です。つまり、「グッドラック」です。

回答ありがとうございます。 ＞名前からしてフランス的英語表現かヨーロッパ英語なのかもしれませんね。 私は英語で書かれたフランス語の本でフランス語を復習しているんですが、質問に出した文はフランス語の原文の英訳になります。 job advertisementも訳語として使われていました。恐らく、反復を避けるための言い換えかもしれません。 それから keepですが原文には相当する単語がなかったです。直訳すると“Let's cross the fingers.”になっています。
