アメリカに38年住んでいる者です。 私なりに書かせてくださいね。 この有名な作家ということですので何かあるな、と考えてください。 つまり、表現に英語の面白さとも言えるものを持ってきているのではないか、と。 この文章を普通に訳すと「あなたがあなたについて本当のことを言わないなら、他の人の真実を言えることはできない」という表現ですね。 さぁ、この表現理論的だと思いますか？ 自分のことについてうそを言う人はほかの人の本当のことを言えない？ なぜその論理が成立すると彼女は言うのでしょう。 自分のことはうそで通しても他の人の真実を知ることはできますね。 また、自分の真実を言えても他の人の真実をいえるかどうかは決まりませんね。 だからこそ、なんとなく何を言っているのかはわかるけど「結局のところどういう意味なのか」はわかりにくい、ということになるわけです。 エッセイへの回答を書くわけにはいきませんが、十分なヒントを続けて書かせてもらいますね。 さて、この文章には二つの単語をうまく使いこなしていると私は感じます。 ひとつはtellという単語とcannotという単語がキーワードになっているのです。 tellの持つ二つの意味合い・フィーリング、とcannotの持つ二つのフィーリングにdon't の持つ単純なフィーリングとが入り乱れて何かを言おうとしているわけですね。 ネットで検索すれば出てくるようなことではなく、何か英語という言葉の面白さを何とかわかってもらうと思い、理論的かどうか、というトピックと、英語単語の持つ複数の意味をたくみに使っている表現力、というトピックの二つを提案させていただきました。 これでいかがでしょうか。 分かりにくい点がありましたら、補足質問してください。

手紙を訳しているのですがどうしてもこの一文の意味がとれません。 If I did not tell you before, I did receive your other letters and a picture of yourself that you sent about 2years ago. 自分でも訳してみたのですが "もし私があなたに以前に言わなかったら、私は2年ほど前にあなたが送った他の手紙や写真を受け取りました"という意味不明の文章になってしまいます。 英語は苦手なので、どなたか翻訳お願いします！
