初めの文は、とりあえず -- で囲まれた部分は無視して読んでみて、その後で全体を見ると分かりやすいかも。 つまり、 → The principal reason why he was always being asked to umpire a game was that he never failed to try to please both teams. という文として、読んでみるのです。すると The principal reason [why he was always being asked to umpire a game] was that he never failed to try to please both teams. となりますが、面倒なら [ ] の中も無視して簡単な文にしてみるとよいかも。すると、 → The principal reason was that he never failed to try to please both teams. （彼がどちらのチームにも喜ばれようとすることに失敗しなかったからというのが主要な理由である） （ ) の中の訳は、逐語訳でみっともないですが、その方が分かりやすいかと思いました。要するに、「両方のチームに歓迎されたから、というのが主な理由だ」 ということ。 そこまで分かっていると、-- で囲まれた部分の意味も取りやすくなってると思います。 aside from the fact that he never expected to be paid for his services, saying that he liked to umpire for the good of the game 長いので途中にカンマが入っているので２つの文のように見えますが、実質的には１つの文とみなせます （かなりもったいぶった書き方をした文章ですね）。「ゲームがスムーズに進行するのが好ましいと思うから審判をやるんだといって、報酬には目もくれなかったことはさて置き ...」 お次の文ですが、よく見ると単純な構造であることが分かります。すなわち、 If one side did not like one of his decisions, he would A until B （片方のチームが審判のジャッジに不服を表明すると、彼は Bするまで A した） というだけのものです。具体的には he would [stop the game then and there and let the players on both sides swear at him as much as they pleased and call him the worst names they would think of （その場で試合を止めさせ、両サイドの選手に思う存分文句を言わせ、思いつく限りの悪態を吐かさせた） という部分が A で until they were tired of arguing and wanted to get back to playing ball （ギャアギャアいうのに疲れ、試合に戻りたいという気になるまで） という部分が B ということになります。 構文の問題ではないですが、訳す場合だと、until 以下を原文と同じように後ろに回して、「ガアガアと喚き散らすと、そのうちに疲れて～してしまう」 などとする手もあるかも。
