私も全然全体を読んでいませんでしたが、確かに #4 の方のおっしゃるように otherwise というのは turn away の部分のみについてではないですね。 only when ～, when ～の部分は後半が例示なような気もしますが、 このような後半のみについてではないです。 ただ、spoils の主語は the aversion ですね、内容的には。 reason は search for の対象となるだけで、 spoils するのは aversion です。 have had となっているのは一般的な現在のことであっても、 条件として「偏見があったり、背けた場合のこと」だが、 「もしそうでなかったら、持っていただろう」というのは 時制の感覚として自然とずれるだけのことです。

こんにちは。 英文の訳し方がよく分かりません。 We always talk about the wonderful careers women might have had,if they hadn't had those children. この文章の訳は「私たちは、女性に5人の子供がいなかったらすばらしい仕事をしていたかもしれない、と常々言っている。」となるらしいのですが、might have hadのhadのあとにthe wonderful careersがあり、それが省略されていると考えて訳すといいのでしょうか？ もう一つ似たような文章で、さっきの文章の続きなのですが、 But nobody looks at fathers and thinks what a life he'd have had if he hadn't had those five children. 「しかし、男性に5人の子供がいなかったらすばらしい人生を送っていたかもしれない、と父親を見て思う人はいない。」となるようですが、これも、どうしてこのように訳されるのかがよく分かりません。 今年から宅浪になるもので、塾や予備校、先生などに聞くことができずにいるため、こちらで質問させていただきました。長くなってしまいましたが、回答よろしくお願いします。

If it were me [to whom it had been thrown], I would have caught it easily.” In most cases, it should be “If it were I.” という英語による文法の説明がありました。しかしこれは時制上、”If it had been me, I would have caught it easily.”となるべきではないのでしょうか？ 同じように、”He didn’t collide with me. He could have caused me and himself serious harm if he crashed into me.”と言うネイティブがいるのですが、これも” He didn’t collide with me. He could have caused me and himself serious harm if he had crashed into me.” と言うべきところではありませんか？ 大過去の形をとるべきであろうと理解される部分の時制を、過去形で表現しているネイティブの言語専門家による仮定法の文例を散見し、混乱しています。 どのようなことが理由か教えて頂ければ幸いです。よろしくお願いいたします。

- 過去形と過去完了形の違い
If she didn't fall down, she might win. If she hadn't fallen down, she might have win. もし彼女が転ばなかったら、勝てたかもしれない 2つの文は同じ意味ですが、過去のある一点を指しているので、過去完了形ではあまり表現しませんか? 過去完了形は何らかの状態が継続していたことを表すので... もし表現として使えるなら、どのように使い分けるか教えていただきたいです。
