こんにちは。 今文法書を片手に総ざらいをしている所なんですが、 疑問をひとつ。 文法書には neither A nor B のあとは単複どちらでもよいとか either A or B は動詞はBにあわせるとありますが 小数点や分数はどうなりますか？ 例えば、 主語が０．５や１．５、３分の１ならどうでしょう？ 「りんごの３分の１が腐っていた。」なら One third of the apple (was? were?)rotten. どちらなのでしょう？りんごは数えられるからこの場合、 １個。でも３分の１だから単数？ そもそも単数とは１を意味すると考えているのですが、 曖昧です。

The membrane allowed water to pass through it freely, but it would not allow molecules of dissolved protein to pass which ( 2 ) molecules to pass through it is known as permeable membrane. However, since the membranes used in this experiment allowed only molecules of the solvent to pass through, they are ( 3 ) as semi-permeable membranes. Two protein solutions were then made up, one at a concentration of 5g dm^-3,and the other at 10 g dm^-3. Some of the 5 g dm^-3 solution was ( 4 ) into one of the glass cylinders, and some of the 10 g dm^-3 solution into the other cylinder. The levels of the water in the beakers and the protein solutions in the glass cylinders were ( 5 ) until they were all equal. The experiment was then left for a period of twenty-four hours. That of gold is 19.3 That of mercury is 13.5. ..... みたいに、同じ構造の文章が並ぶ場合、2回目以降、densityをthatに言い換えて 表現します。しかしながら、that of～がたくさん並ぶ聞いている方も話す方も面倒くさく なるのではないでしょうか？ それで The density of water is about 1. Gold 19.3 Mercury 13.5. みたいに、動詞や構文を無視して表現しても良いのでしょうか？ もっと良い方法がありましたら教えて頂けますでしょうか？ ・A was B. C was D. E was F. と文が続く場合、どうすれば良いでしょうか？ 書き文章の場合だと、A, C and E was B, D and F, respectively. とまとめることが出来ますが、話し言葉では、 respectivelyは避けた方が良いと、プレゼンの本に書かれていました。 しかしながら、同じ構文の文章を続けて話すのは聞きづらいのではないでしょうか？ これをA was B. The peroxide value (PV) was determined by the ferric thiocyanate method [9]. A 0.1-g oil sample was weighed and 9.7 ml ethanol added. Thus, the oil was dissolved. Next, 0.1 mL NH4SCN and 0.1 mL FeCl2 were added to the above-mentioned solution, and kept at room temperature for 5 min. Absorbance of the sample was measured at 500 nm. The results were expressed in mequiv/kg oil. TBARS (2-thiobarbituric acid-reactive substances) was determined as described by Abuzaytoun et al. [16]. A 0.05–0.20-g oil sample was weighed into 25-mL volumetric flasks, dissolved in a small volume of 1-butanol, and made up to the mark with the same solvent. A 5.0-mL portion of this mixture was transferred into a dry test tube, and then a fresh 2-TBA reagent (5 mL of a solution of 200 mg 2-TBA in 100 mL 1-butanol) was added to it. The contents were mixed and heated in a water bath at 95 C for 2 h. The absorbance of the resultant colored complex was measured at 532 nm. The TBARS values were calculated by multiplying the absorbance reading by a factor of 0.347. This factor was determined from a standard line prepared using 1,1,3,3-tetramethoxypropane as a precursor of malonaldehyde (MA). The results were expressed in mmol MA equiv/g oil. The induction period of the oil samples were determined by the Metrohm Rancimat apparatus model 743 (Metrohm, Switzerland) [17]. Then, 4.0 g of each oil sample was weighed in the reaction vessel glassware. The conductimetry cells were filled with deionized water up to 90 mL. Samples were heated at 110 C and air was passed through the heated oil at a rate of 20 L/h. The induction period was determined automatically by the device and expressed in hours. The infrared spectra of the samples were recorded on a FTIR (Varian 1000 Model) system with a horizontal attenuated total reflectance (ATR) apparatus [18]. The spectrometer was equipped with a deuterated triglycine sulfate detector and purged with dry nitrogen (DuraDry, Haverhill, MA). The ATR crystal was cleaned with pure chloroform before each measurement. A 40-lL oil sample was spread as a thin layer in the ATR crystal and periodical scans (18 scans, 4 cm-1 resolution) were obtained in the spectral range of 400–4,000 cm-1 at 20-min intervals for 360 min. こんにちは。 Harry Potter and the Goblet of fire [UK版 adult] のp.546 の真ん中あたりの文に関してです。 第2の課題で湖底にいるハリーを水中人が取り囲んでいる場面です。 'There might be a lot more of them than there were of him.' themは水中人を、himはハリーを指しているのだと思います。 この文の「there were of him」 の「were」と「of」の間には何かが省略されていると思うのですが、何が省略されているのでしょうか？「more」でしょうか？ また、him(ハリー)は一人なのに「were」を使ってもいいのでしょうか？ 教えてください。 よろしくお願いします。

The Ottoman forces were led by Ali İhsan Bey and Colmar Freiherr von der Goltz. The British forces were led by Fenton Aylmer. The Battle of Dujaila ended with the Ottoman’s victory. The British had at their disposal 18.891 infantry, 68 artillery guns and 1.268 cavalry. Ottomans had: 8.500 infantry, 1.500 cavalry and 32 artillery guns. Aymer split his forces into three columns. They were marked as A, B and C. A and B columns were together and they were under control of Major-General Kemball. The C column was under command of Major-General Kearny. All three columns started crossing river on 7 March 1916. However, they had a hard time with night-time navigation. Columns A and B separated and they lost contact with each other. The artillery was lost as well. They reach the desired destination an hour and a half after the rest of the force. The attack was delayed and the British lost the element of surprise. During their preparation, Von Der Goltz started ferrying 52ndf Division to the left bank in order to reinforce divisions. By the end of the Battle of Dujaila, he moved 8.000 soldiers across the river. The artillery attack began at 7 a.m. The first units, 59th Scinde Rifles and 1st Manchester Regiment captured first two lines of the Ottomans trenches. However, they didn’t have support so they had to withdraw, eventually. The 8th Brigade had 2.301 soldiers at the beginning of the battle. They lost 1.174. In total, the British lost 3.500 soldiers. The Ottomans lost 1.290.

英語の文章でわからない構文があります。 ラジオ英会話のテキストの文章の一部に、 「The birds paid no heed to the Swallow's words,and by and by the hemp grew up and was made into cord, and of the cord nets were made, and many a bird that had despised the Swallow's advise was caught in the nets made out of that very hemp.」 とあるのですが、and of the cord nets were madeの部分のofの役割がわかりません。 このofはいらない気がするのですが、表記してあるということは何らかの意味をもつわけですよね？ その前に出てくるcordを用いて網を作ったという意味でofが使われていることが言いたいのだと想像していますが、主語として「of the cord net」という文章を使うものなのでしょうか？ どなたか教えてくださいm(_ _)m ちなみに訳は：鳥たちはツバメの助言に耳を貸さなかった。そして麻は徐々に育ち、ひもにされ、そのひもから網が作られ、ツバメの助言を嘲笑った多くの鳥たちは、まさにその麻でできた網で捕えられたのだ です。
