When these heroes ask for nothing in return, it makes us admire them all the more. This would seem to describe the many acts of heroism perfomed not by people, but by dogs. Taffy was an ordinary cocker spaniel. One winter day, the dog followed three-year-old Stevie Wilson around the yard. Stevie's father was nearby, working on some horses. Suddenly, Taffy ran up to Wilson, barking. When Mr. Wilson ignored Taffy, the dog bit his horse's leg. This got Wilson's sttention. He then noticed that Taffy would run five meters, stop, and stare at him. The dog wanted to tell the man something! Taffy would led Wilson to a small pond near the Wilson home. Wilson saw a hole in the ice on the pond, and a jacket floating on top. He quickly jumped into the water and saved his son from drowning, just in time. Taffy had saved a life. Zorro, a German shepherd, showed us why we use the words "man's best friend" for dogs. Zorro and his owner went for a hike in a national park. After his owner fell 30 meters from a hiking path into a pool of water and lost consciousness, Zorro raced to the water and pulled his owner out. Then Zorro lay on top of his master all night to keep him warm. Even after the man was discovered by rescue workers the next day and taken to a hospital, where he recovered, Zorro stayed in the park to watch his master's backpack. Grizzly Bear was probably the bravest of the three, a bog Saint Bernard owned by the Gratias family. One day, Mrs. Gratias saw a baby bear in her backyard. Immendiately, she worried about her little daughter and ran toward the house. When she turned the corner, unfortunately, the mother bear was there. The bear knocked Gratias to the ground, biting her and hitting her repeatedly. Gratias would have surely been killed, but Grizzly Bear suddenly appeared and began fighting the much larger animal. The real bear could not catch the quick dog, who attacked the bear from the back and then ran around it in circles. Eventually, the tired bear and her cub returned to the woods. Grizzly Bear had saved his owner from certain death. Dog are not only loyal pets, but they save lives. They prove time and again that they are heroes. They do not seem to fear dangerous conditions; in return, all they ask for is a pet on the head. This would seem to define a hero.

Suddenly, Marvin felt a strong pull on his left arm. It was Max! He had jumped into the cold water and was firmly holding his exhausted master. Then he pulled him nearly twenty feet toward the dock. Marvin tried hard to catch the side of the dock. He could see that the dog, too, was already exhausted from his rescue efforts. Somehow Marvin managed to push Max onto the dock. But Marvin's legs were badly injured and he couldn't movethem. He tried hard to climb onto the dock by himself, but because of the cold water and the pain in his injured legs, he began to black out, and his grip on the dock became loose. Suddenly, the sight of his late dinner and the Christmas cards in the warm dining room appeared in his mind. He fell back into the water and again went under.

But again Max came to the rescue. He jumped once more into the water, again caught his master by the arm, and this time pulled him about four feet toward the dock. After Marvin had recovered enough to push Max onto the dock, he held on firmly to the dock. His grip on the dock,however, started to loosen once again. Marvin knew he had no more energy left and feared that he was going to die. As Marvin began to slip into the water for a third and final time, Max fixed his four feet firmly on the dock, held his master's arm in his teeth and pulled him with all his might. Marvin was very surprised by this unexpected help. He used every bit of strength he had left, and somehow managed to pull his body up onto the dock. There he lay still like a dead leaf. After a white, Marvin began moving toward the house. Max stayed beside his master and used every bit of strength he had to helphim. Man and dog made their way slowly up the three-hundred-foot slope to a point near the back door.

As he walked downthe three-hundred-foot slope to the lake, Marvin was followed by his dog, Max. Max loved to run around with his master. Though it was very late and cold, he seemed very pleased with the unexpected trip. At the dock, Marvin saw that his fears were right. A film of ice was beginning to appear around the boat. Marvin picked up a log and tried to push the boat to break the ice. But he did not know that water from the lake had make the dock wet. As he pushed with the log, he fell down, and his body hit the dock. He badly injured his legs, and he fell into the cold fifteen-foot-deep water. The cold waters began to pull him toward the dock, but he had little strength and soon went under the water.
