＃4です。 ＞lose themselvesってどういう意味なのでしょうか？ lose oneself で「道に迷う」などの意味ですが、この場合はhigh waters がlose themselves することになりますので、水かさの上がった川面が岸から溢れ出て氾濫原の森へと流れ込む状態を擬人化していったものと理解しました。つまり、本来であれば、その川の水は上流から下流へと川の中を進んで行くものですが、溢れてしまったために川から氾濫原の森の中へと「迷い出てしまった」ということかと。 でも、氾濫原の森の中での出来事で人家には影響がないため、ここを訪れる人以外は川が溢れたという認識も普段はないということでしょう。 また、最後の文ですが、小道が氾濫した川によって流木や草などで覆われてしまい、道がなくなって元の森に戻ってしまった状態を指していると理解しました。

but I'm going to bet there's hundreds of opportunitiesという言葉があるのですが、このthere's(there is)は、hundredsと複数になってるのでthere areの方が正しくないですか？ ネーティーブの方の文なので間違えるはずがないし、なにか文法的な理由があるのでしょうか？

こんにちは、いつもお世話になります。 「原仙作 著：英文法標準問題精講」より、 There can be no man of worth but has a piece of singularity. （P２２４） 語の品詞・用法のページに出てきた英文なので、butが関係代名詞という事が載っているだけで、和訳が載っていません。 興味深い英文なので、和訳を考えてみました。 piece of singularityだけは、「一風かわったところ、奇癖」と載っていました。 「一風かわったところはあっても、人するだけの価値はないだろう。」 で良いでしょうか？ 教えてください、よろしくお願い致します。
