こんにちは！ Various troubles in social life are often caused （貴訳）社会生活におけるさまざまな揉め事はしばしば．．．もたらされる ●これはいいです。 by not determining clearly when private information should be revealed and when it should be concealed （貴訳）個人情報を明らかにすべきときや隠すべきときにはっきりと決心しないことで ●ここがまずいです。by not determining は、「決めないことで」です。be determined to do 「～すると決心している」の混同があります。そして、determine は他動詞ですので、目的語を必要とします。この場合、when 節が目的語です。であれば、「いつ～かを」という訳になるはずです。determine 目的語 + when節なら、目的語がもうありますので、when節は副詞節、すなわち「～するとき」になります。 一般的に、when節を、いつ～と訳す場合、～する時と訳す場合をどう見分けるかは、その when節が文中でどのような役割を果たしているかによります。 名詞節としてなら、いつ～ 副詞節としてなら、～する時 です。お尋ねの文では、determine の目的語になっていますので、名詞節です。（目的語は名詞しかなれません。）よって、いつ～かを、という訳になります。 what節はこれより厄介です。what節は名詞節ですが what が疑問詞なら、何と訳す what が関係代名詞なら、～することと訳す と公式化できますが、区別がつきにくい場合も多いです。 I don't know what this means. は、（これが何を意味するか分らない。）とも、（これが意味することが分らない。）とも訳せます。 ほとんどの人は、どちらの訳も試してみて、その文脈で自然なほうを選んでいると思います。 以上、ご参考になれば幸いです！

no1です。 「～するとき」が副詞節でした。 アホですいません。
whenやwhatなどは，名詞節，形容詞節，副詞節の３つにわけられます。 それによって，訳が変わります。アホな人は，文脈で何となく選ぶわけです。 whenの場合，「いつ～」は副詞節，「～するとき」は形容詞節ですね。 たくさん接続詞はありますから，辞書を引いてまとめて覚るといいと思います。

ちょっと皆様のお知恵を拝借したいのですが、英語の授業でこういう文がありました。 Ａ:"We should let our son have an independent life." Ｂ:"( )? It's about time for him to live on his own." (1)By no means (2)Certainly not (3)When not (4)Why not 私は(4)のWhy notにしたのですが、授業では、(3)のWhen notと教わりました。納得がいかなかったので質問に行ったところ、Why not は、例えば"Let's play tennis."といったような勧誘に対して"もちろん！"という同意を表す時にしか使わなく、Ａの文では別に勧誘はしておらず、Ｂの返答のところは"もう自立させてもいい頃だ"という「時間」について言っているので 、"一体今やらないでいつやるの？"いう意味を含むWhen notを使うと解説されました。しかし、その先生は普段から間違ったことを教えることがままあるのでそのまま答えを鵜呑みするのが不安です。 果たしてWne not?という用法はあるのですか？私はWhy not?ではないかなと未だに納得がいきません。もし私の考えが間違っているようでしたら是非ご教授を賜りたいと思います。そして、もし私の考えが合っているようでしたら、他のみんなは授業中に間違った事を習ったままになるのでその先生に言いに行って見ようかと思いますので、Why not?が正解である理由と、When not?が違う理由をお教えいただけると大変助かります。よろしくお願いいたしますm(_ _)m

なるほど！ determineの部分ありがとうございました。 確かに他動詞は「～に,～を」が必要ですね＞＜ 現役時代に単語帳1冊の意味は覚えたものの、自動詞か他動詞か(どちらもあるものもありますが）はしっかり覚えていなかったので今年はきちんとそういうところも覚えていこうと思います。 そして、使い分けもありがとうございました。 同級生の頭の良い友人はwhenもwhatも文脈だよ、とのことで 参考書もどこを見ればよいかわからず(今調べたらwhen節の時制のところに時の副詞節は「～する時」,名詞節は...と載っていました。時制の問題は～する時(when),もし～すれば(if)＝条件(whenはあくまで条件っぽいですが;)と考えて時制をずらす、みたいな感じで解けるのですが、ああいうのも何節かで決まるのですね！) 先生には今更聞けない＞＜と困っていたので助かりました。 すごーくわかりやすかったです！ ありがとうございました^^★
