"on" 単体でのニュアンスは「接触」とか「所属」など、平たく言えば「そこにあるという状態」を表します。 ところが、"onto" とすると、その状態への「変化・方向性」といったニュアンスになります。ここでは「空席の上という位置へ」という方向性が含まれているわけです。 ちなみに "onto" は "on to" と２語で書かれる場合があり、今回のケースがそれです。 ちなみに、厳密にはこういった違いがありますが、どうやら on でいい所も onto を使ったりすることもたまにはあるみたいですよ。

こんにちは、 今回も"harry potterand the chamber of secrets"[UK版]に関してです。 P.82の上から３行目の文です。 状況としては、土曜日の朝、ハリーがクイディッチのキャプテンであるウッドに早朝練習のために起こされたので、ユニフォームを着て、親友のロンにメモを残して箒をもって談話室へ下りて行こうとしている場面です。 "When he'd found his scarlet team robes and pulled on his cloak for warmth, Harry scribbled a note to Ron explaining where he'd gone and went down the spiral staircase to the commonroom, his Nimbus Two Thousand on his shoulder" 上記の英文の "Harry scribbled a note to Ron explaining where he'd gone ・・・" に関してですが、 「ロンにメモを走り書きする」を表す"scribble a note to Ron"のあとの"explaining"はなぜ『ing』が付いているのでしょうか？ "Harry scribbled a note to Ron"と"The memo explained where he'd gone"という文を関係代名詞で１つにして "Harry scribbled a note to Ron which explained where he'd gone" ならわかるのですが。 この文を、略すると "Harry scribbled a note to Ron explaining where he'd gone" となる、ということでしょうか？ 教えてください。 よろしくお願いします。

ハリーポッターの秘密の部屋（HARRY POTTER and the Chamber of Secrets）の29ページ９から10行目 ”The Weasleys roared with laughter and Harry settled back in his seat,grinning from ear to ear.” from ear to earで口を大きく開けてという意味らしいですが、辞書の例文もgrinを使っているし、grinとセットで使うものなのでしょうか？日本語の「笑う」に相当する単語はsmileやlaughがありますが、この二つではどうなのでしょうか？ 笑っていなくても、例えば「open your mouth from ear to ear 」と言ったりはするのですか？

HARRY POTTER and the Chamber of Secrets 118ページ 18行目 Malfoy was on all fours, banging the ground with his fist. の on all fours の意味はなんでしょうか。 この場面は、RonがMalfoyに魔法をかけようとしたのですが、杖が壊れていたために 逆噴射して自分にかかり、口からナメクジを吐き出した所です。Malfoy含め、Malfoyと同じ寮の生徒がRonの姿を見て大笑いしている時の一文になります。 文の後半で拳で地面を叩いているとあるので、四つん這いになっているとか、そんな感じでしょうか。

こんにちは。 Harry potter and the goblet of fire[UK アダルト版]p.252の真ん中ちょっと下あたりの文に関してです。 "It was Harry suggesting she might be too tired, and that perhaps he would ask Ron to borrow Pigwidgeon, that made her stick out her leg and allow him to tie that letter to it." 日本語訳では、 ”ハリーが、ヘドウィグは疲れているだろうから、ロンに頼んでピッグウィジョンを貸してもらおうかなと仄めかすと、ヘドウィグはやっと脚を突き出し、ハリーに手紙を括り付けることを許した。” とあるのですが、なぜ、上記の英文で、「～すると、…は～した。」と言う構文になるのでしょうか？ ', that made her...'の'that'は'Harry suggesting'を指しているのでしょうか？ 'Harry suggesting she might ...'の'suggesting'と'she'の間には'that'が省略されているのでしょうか？ 基本的な分の構造としては、'Harry suggesting'が'made her stick out'させたというこうとでいいのでしょうか？ それをIt is that の強調構文で強調しているという解釈でしょうか？ 質問ばかりですいません。 教えてください。 よろしくお願いします。
