私はAno.1さんとは違う解釈になりました。 oneはthat 以下（thatはoneの補語）、but one （oneのケースではない）： アメリカの警告は予防策であり、人間の海洋汚染結果ではない。

既出の単語を省略する場合、the one か thatを使うと思いますが使い分けを教えて下さい。 例えば、「青い紙に書かれているserial No.と、赤い紙に書かれているそれ（serial No.）が違います」 という文章を書く場合、the one でしょうか？ thatが適切でしょうか？ 変な例文ですが・・・ The serial number written on the blue paper is different from the one/that on the red paper.

以前、学校でthe one とthatの違いは、 前にでてきた単語と同一かどうか。全く同じならthat 違うのならthe oneということだったのですが Ｔhe population of Osaka is smaller than that of Tokyo (大阪の人口は東京の人口より少ない) この文、東京の人口と大阪の人口は違うはずなのに なぜtha oneをつかわないんでしょうか

thatはthe＋前出名詞を受けることが出来ます。またoneはa＋前出名詞（可算）を受けることが出来ます。よって that＝the one と書くことも出来ます。 ここまでは理解できたのですが、修飾に関して that of～{もしくは修飾語句}(of～がthatにかかる)○ the one of～{〃}（of～がoneにかかる）× と参考書にありました。なぜof{修飾語句}はthatにかかれてoneにかかることが出来ないのでしょうか？また、 a Japanese car ○ a car of Japanese × ともありました。同じような理由だと思うのですがはっきり分からないので、アドバイスお願いします！

先ほど質問させていただいたものにまた 新たに疑問が。。 Ｔｈｅ climate of japan is milder than that of England(日本の気候はイギリスの気候より温暖だ) このときのthatは前の文のＴｈｅ climate をあらわしています でもこれって、名詞のかわりをするoneやitと同じじゃないですか？？ oneとitの違いは定冠詞の不定冠詞みたいなかんじのくべつ、でも どういうときにthatをつかうのでしょうかoneやiyとの違いはなんでしょう。
