そうですねぇ、確かに上の方の文章「Her relative passed away three days ago.」というのは文法的にも特に間違ったところはないですし、通じはします。 単数形のrelativeを使っていますので、亡くなった親戚は"ひとり"というのも理解されはするでしょう。 しかし、名詞の単複の実際の形は度外視して「親戚・親類」という言葉というか概念は普通は複数の人物を想起させるモノです。 なぜなら、今現在は他界しているとか私生児だとかで親が誰か分からないorいないようなケースでも、突き詰めていけば♂(精子)と♀(卵子)がいてその子供である"自分"が存在しているわけで、そしてその親にも同じ事が言えるわけですので、ずぅ～～っと一人っ子であったとしても"親戚"というのはどうしても「複数人いるものだ」ということが想起されます。 そういった感覚からなのか、relativeを所有格代名詞で修飾する際は複数形のrelativesの時には特に問題なく普通に「one's relatives」と使うのですが、単数形の時には「one's relative」のようには普通はあまり言わないのが経験上、実情のように感じます。 「(通常は複数いるのが当たり前と想定される)親戚の中の"ひとり"」と言うイメージで、例え日本語訳では"親戚のひとり"と明示されていないような場合でも"one of her relatives"と表現したり、"a relative of hers"というように独立所有格を使った形で表現する事が多いです。 これは所有格代名詞での修飾だけでなく、"私の父方の"と言う形での修飾の時でも同様で"my paternal relative"のように言うよりも、 "a paternal relative of mine" "a relative on my father's side" "one of my paternal relatives" のように表現することが多いです。

Three of us ladies planned a trip to New York for two nights to see shows. We reserved a hotel room to share among us. Train and theater tickets were purchased ahead of time. Several days before our planned departure, one person backed out because a relative was near death, and she needed to fly across the country to be with him. When the remaining two of us asked her to pay her portion of the hotel bill, she refused. She played the "sympathy" card saying she was already out the train and theater tickets as well as the cost of flying to see her relative, and we should have empathy and not expect her to pay her part of the room. two nightsとありますが、two daysと言うのとはどう違うのでしょうか？あと、out the train and theater ticketsとはどのような意味でしょうか？よろしくお願いします

My grandfather passed away three years ago. It was the first death in the family I’ve experienced. I was absolutely in bits when he died. He was very healthy all of my life until that point. He had an ongoing “flu” for a couple weeks that turned out to be cancer, and he passed within a month of letting all of the immediate family know about the diagnosis. He did not opt for treatment that would have lengthened his life, which I absolutely am grateful for. He passed on his own terms in his home. He went away from home three years ago, and has never been heard of since . という文なのですが どうして 消息がない というのをhas never been heard という 受身にしているのでしょうか? 彼が家を出て行き それから彼が便りを受けていない ということになるのではないでしょうか? 彼に対しての受身ではないのですか? The new mayor is well spoken of by the citizens. be spoken well of で褒められるという ことになると思うんですが どうして wellが前に出ているのでしょうか よろしくお願いします。
