和訳＆英文解釈をお願いします。

より完璧な翻訳は: 「彼はメキシコ戦争を支援しない為、税金を払わなかった。そのために刑務所でその夜を過ごすことになったのだ。」 ですね。 for refusingは"because"のような形で動き、この文章の中では「spent the night in jail」の理由となっています。 with his taxesとは「refusing to support - with his taxes」で、「メキシコ戦争を税金を払わずにサポートするのを拒んだ」という意味合いです。 しかし、この英文自体あまりクリアじゃないですね・・・。もっと意味が通るようにするには He spent the night in jail for refusing to support the Mexican War by not paying taxes. として、not payingを付けて補う必要があります。 因みにこれはHenry David ThoreauのCivil Disobedienceの紹介文ですよね。彼を研究したことがあるので知ってました。

英文解釈力&文法力についてですが、本格的に英語を学びたいならばTOEICのような試験に向けて勉強されることをお勧めします。 試験をマスターしても真の英語力にはつながりませんけれども、英文理解と文法理解についてはある程度基礎が固まってきます。
