さらに、彼は自身の背に「大きな重荷」を背負っている。それは罪の重さであり、原罪と アダムから引き継いだ罪の状態の上から、さらに今も積み重ねて犯してしている個人的な罪 の両方の重さである。 ※なるべく直訳にしましたが、「さらに今も積み重ねて」はこちらで付け加えた言葉です。 ジョン・バニアンの名を懐かしく思い出しました。学生時代の講義で読んだものです。当時はまだイギリスでは小説の技法が未発達で「源氏物語」などの方が散文としては完成度が高いらしいです。また、西欧では聖書の次に、この「Pilgrim's Progress」が読まれているということを、アメリカから大学に教えに来られていた先生に聞きました。(今となっては本当かどう疑わしいと思うようになりましたが・・・)

うーん、まあ「原罪を背負っている」以外は全て現在形であることが特徴ですね。 これは、まあ文法書が言う「確定した未来」ということになるんでしょうか。宿命というほうがいいんですかね。 heは男女の区別なく「人間」ということにして訳してみます。まあ一例にしか過ぎません。何せ原文が含蓄深い感じですし。 「さらに、人間はその背に『大いなる重荷』を背負う。それは人間が犯す罪の重荷であり、原罪、つまりアダムから引き継がされた罪だけでなく、それに積み重ねるように、それを大きく超えて積み重ねていく人間個々人の罪である。」

Like John Donne before him, though in a different cause, he now turned for religious reasons from poetry to prose; but what he now began to write was not calm devotional literature, but fierce religious controversy.In a series of strongly worded pamphlets he attacked the ceremonies and government of the Anglican Church; and he went on to proclaim a new and purer Reformation, of which he would be the prophet. Above all, he appealed to the evangelical ideal of liberty which had, in his opinion, been trampled underfoot by the tyranny not only of the old Catholic Church, but also of the present Church of England. With the victory of the Puritan army under Oliver Cromwell and the eventual execution of King Charles, the services of Milton as controversialist, and subsequently as Latin secretary to Cromwell, were no longer required. He had, in any case, become blind in the process.
