たった1行の文なのに、ややこしいですね^^; まず、この文は2つに分けて考えると良いと思います。 It is a large, open-plan flat, with light wooden floors. It（＝the flat) centres on a hallway lined with black and white pictures. なぜ、2番目の文の主語が、floorsでなくflatであると思うかというと、 このwith light wooden floorsというのは、単にもともとあった文に 挿入されたものだからです（両端にコンマがあるので、これが挿入句だと 分かります）。また内容的にも、flatが主語と考えた方が自然です。 それで、まず1番目の文から訳していくと、 「それは、明るい木の床の、広くてオープンプランのフラットです。」 フラットは、前の回答者様の解説の通りですね。ひとつのフラットの中に、 普通は寝室もキッチンもトイレも全部あります。ここでは、オープンプラン といっているので、こまごまとした仕切りがない、ということでしょう。 lightの訳についても、明るいでいいと思います。木の床なので、だいたい 茶色だってことは分かっていて、それが明るい茶色なのか（light）、暗い こげ茶色みたいなのか（dark）、という感じですね。 そして、2番目の文ですが、ここではThe flat centres on a hallway というのですから、「そのフラットは廊下の真ん中にある」という訳でいい と思います。hallwayというのは、フラットのなかの部屋と部屋を結ぶ廊下 という意味でも使われますが、この場合はフラットとフラットを結ぶ外廊下の ことを指していると思います。日本のアパートなんかもそうだと思うのですが、 階段を上ると踊り場（hall）があり、そこから廊下（hallway）が伸びていて、 フラットのドアがいくつも並んでいるというイメージですね。 on a hallwayのonを難しく考える必要はなくて、例えば「この家はA通りに ある（This house is on A Street）」という文と同じことだと思います。 そして、centreには、「・・・の真ん中にある」という意味があります。前の 回答者様がセンタリングという言葉を出していらっしゃいましたが、まさに そのような感じで、例えばIt centres on the page.というと、「それが ページの真ん中にある（くる）」という意味になります。 そして、そのhallwayは、lined with black and white picturesと いっていますから、「モノクロ写真が並んでいる廊下」となりますね。 ですから、全体をまとめると、下のような感じでしょうか。 それは、明るい木の床の、広いオープンプランのフラットで、モノクロ写真が 並んでいる廊下の真ん中にある。

♯9です。先日の回答が言葉足らずだったみたいで、失礼しました。 私の訳についてコメントを頂いたようですので、私の理解についてこちらで 書かせていただきます。 ＞lightの意味が納得いかないという人は、下の「参考URL」でもご覧ください。 そこには「light wooden」ではなく、「light wood」という言葉の意味が 載っています。色が薄いってことじゃないですよ…。 lightwoodという単語は知っています。一語で綴るものかと思っていましたが、 2語にわけてもいいみたいですね。参考になりました。 ただ、頭が固いと思われるかも知れませんが（笑）、このlightは、やはり 「色が明るい（薄い・淡い）」という意味で訳すのが一般的だと思います。 青とか緑とか、色を表す単語がないと「明るい」とは訳せないとおっしゃって いますが、そんなことはありません。 私は英国に移住して長いのですが、普通の会話でも、 He has light skin. 何ども回答ありがとうございます。混乱しました（笑) center onのところですが、NATIVEの人に聞いてみたところ、"ambiguous"と言われたので何かイギリス人でも分かりにくい文章ですね。イギリス人が書いた本なんですけど。こちらこそ混乱させてすみませんでした。

lightの意味が納得いかないという人は、下の「参考URL」でもご覧ください。 そこには「light wooden」ではなく、「light wood」という言葉の意味が載っています。 色が薄いってことじゃないですよ…。 まあ、いくら言っても考えは変わらないのかもしれませんが…。 light woodenにせよlight woodにせよ、世の中ではそこそこ使われている表現です。 木材が大好きな、日本の文化の紹介などでも見かけますよ。 堅くて大きな木材から作る仏像のような手の込んだものではなく、法隆寺のように大がかりなものでもないし、装飾も派手ではない。 私は別に材料や工芸に関して専門知識などはありませんが、「素朴な木工品」といったイメージを持ちます。 それと、「line with」の訳を無視せず、ちゃんと辞書で意味を拾ってください。 No.3に辞書ページへのリンクを貼ってありますので。 「line with」の意味が分かることによって、次の段階として、picturesは写真かもしれないけど、そうでなくてもいいかもしれないと思えるんじゃないでしょうか。 pictureは画像、movieなら動画。 必ずしも写真や映画だけに限定されるものではありません。 質問者さんの出された文の全体の訳は、No.3を参照ください。 （No.3では「軽くあしらわれている」と書きましたが、材料自体が軽く柔らかなものだとのイメージで捉える人もいそうです。それはアリです。）

今回のlightが「軽い」と言っているのは、「あっさり」、「重苦しくない」、「少し」といったニュアンス。 他に例えば、light food、light readingなど。 目方が重い軽いということではありません。 「淡い」、「薄い」という意味は、基本的に、色を表す言葉があるとき。 light green The blue color became lighter. などの表現なら、淡いという意味に思えます。

そうですね、私も回答者どうしのやりとりもどうかと思ったのですが、私は質問者さんの訳にちかい考えなので、まったく違う回答を見て、「ちょっと待った」と思ってしまい。。失礼しました。 Center onについては、ご説明いただいた通り私の勘違いで、この場合は、「to have something as its center」はあてはまりません。前回の回答を考えている最中もなぜか、この部分はしっくり来なくて書いていて100%納得していませんでした。もしかしてネイティブの英語ではないのかなと。 というのは、wooden floorsという表現にもちょっと引っかかっていて。。。今試しに「wooden floors」と検索したのですが、結果は「wood flooring」だけ。Floorには「部屋」の意味もありますが、改めて調べたら、a public space for activities such as dancing and having formal discussionsとのことなので、フラットの「部屋」には使えません。でも、「フローリングの床」という意味なら、さっきの検索結果のように、wood flooring だと思います。 で、何が言いたいかと言うと、この英語はネイティブが書いたものではない可能性がある、ということ。Classifiedかなにかでしょうか。だとすると、問題のcenter 以下の部分は、「with a hallway ..... in the middle/center」（真ん中にhallwayのある）という言い方が正しいのかもしれません。 Lightは、「色の薄い」でいいと思います。『軽い床』という表現は見たことないですし。。。。 * 質問者さんの訳で「ワンルーム」とありますが、英語ではワンルームはstudioというので、やはり違いますね。。。だとすると結局、floorは部屋が複数あるということなのでしょうか。。。。

何ども回答ありがとうございます。この文はネイティブが書いた本ですが、ネイティブが読んでも分かりずらい文みたいです。日本語の本でもそういうのありますね。イギリス人に聞いたらそのイギリス人の説明が難しかったのですが（笑)おっしゃるとおり、FLATはひとつの部屋ではなく、トイレとかバスルームがあるけど壁の仕切りがない感じ。。みたいです。＾＾；

回答者どうしでのやり取りというのもどうなんだろうと思いますが、問いかけられましたので、No.5さんにお答えします。 「ceter on ～」とは、普通は、「～に集中する」という意味です。 ご指摘の「to have something as its center」は、この意味だと思うのですが。 典型例としては、「議論が○○の話題に集中する」など。 もっと具体的なものがonの次に来ても構いませんが。 果たして、質問者さんがお示しの文においても、そのcenter onというイディオム的な組み合わせで使われているのでしょうか？ よく、ワープロソフトの書式で文章をページの真ん中に持ってくることをcenteringと言いますが、今回のcenterは「集中」ではなく、そういうcenterではないのですか？ つまり単に、真ん中にあるという意味。 どこの真ん中かというと、on a hallway、廊下（の床面）の上なんだよと。 onは、centerとの組み合わせではなく、a hallway（の面）との組み合わせで使われているのではないですか？ それと、lightを明るい色と訳している回答が散見されますが、今回の文で、明るい色という意味になるでしょうか。 私は「軽い」と訳すべきものと思いましたが。

No. 2です。No.3&4さんへ。 確かに、center on は自動詞です。質問者さんもそのように訳していますね。 でも、center on something で、to have something as its centerと言う意味が、手持ちのadvanced learners' dictionary（ケンブリッジ）に載っています（オンラインの辞書でうまく定義しているのがなかったので手持ちの辞書から引用です）。 つまり、この場合なら、主語（flat)は、hallwayを真ん中として持つ＝hallwayがflatの真ん中にある、と言う意味になります。 先ほどの訳に補足すると、「flatは、大きくて開放感のある間取り、床は明るい色のウッドフロアー（floorsなので床＝部屋は複数）、flatの真ん中に、両側に白黒の写真（この場合は「写真」でしょう）が飾ってある廊下がある。」

No.3の者です。 先ほど書き忘れたことを、追記させていただきます。 この文でcentreは、他動詞ではなく、自動詞です。 つまり、過去分詞centredではなく、現在分詞centringの形で使われています。 したがって訳も、「真ん中に置く」ではなく、「真ん中にある」となります。 何が真ん中にあるのでしょうか？ そう、木製の床が真ん中にあるのですね。

center on =中心とする なので この意味であっていると思います。 でも、flat は、日本語でいうマンションやアパートといった集合住宅の中の、一世帯が住む単位のことを言います。（日本語でなんというのか、いつも考えてしまうのですが）なので「一部屋」ではありません。 flatが集まって a block of flats (日本語で言うところのアパート、マンション）になります。 なので、訳は、「flatは、大きくて開放感のある間取り、床は明るい色のウッドフロアー、真ん中に、両側に白黒の写真（この場合は「写真」でしょう）が飾ってある廊下がある。」

He was an old widower of seventy-six years of age who lived alone in two rooms on the third floor of a block of tenement flats. His wife had died two years previously and he had no children. He was a very thin, large-boned man with a high-domed forehead and a permanent stoop. His frayed waistcoat and trousers hung in folds. At the time of calling, 5.30 pm, he was having his first meal of the day, a hot-pot of mashed peas and ham washed down with a pint of tea from a large mug. The lining-room was dilapidated, with old black-out curtains covering the windows, crockery placed on newspapers, and piles of old magazines tucked under the chairs. In one corner of the room by an open fireplace (a kitchener) stood a broken meat-safe with scraps of food inside. There was a photo of his wife in her twenties on the mantel-piece tonight with one of a barmaid and a pin-up from a Sunday paper. His wife's coat still hung on a hook on the door and her slippers were tidily placed in the hearth.
