「そうですね。先にやっておかなければならないことを片付けておきましょうか」 これは一種の腹芸です。'preliminaries' は「予めやっておくべきこと」という意味で、医者はこの言葉によって「治療費の前払い」ということを間接的に表現しているのでしょう。 つまり、医者の意味するところは 「治療費は前払いだ。治療に入る前に払ってもらおうか」 ということです。 患者のほうも「治療費は前払いですね」というような露骨な言葉を謹んで「ああ、あっ、わかりました」というようなあいまいな言葉で応じています。

中学の問題です。 「But we haven't decided what kind of pet we should get.」 この文の decided より後の分の構造が分かりません。 what kind of pet と we should get がそれぞれ目的語＋目的語になっているのでしょうか。 それとも we should get が関係代名詞節で pet にかかっているのでしょうか。 それとも全く違う解釈があるのでしょうか。よろしくお願いします。

ドラマで見たshouldを使った言葉で、発言者の真意というか、どういうような意味合いで言っているのかがつかめませんでした。 (1) 女の子が誕生日にプレゼントをくれた友人の男の子に"That's so sweet of you! Can I give you a hug?"というと、男の子が"Yeah, you should!"と答えていましたが、これはよくある返答ですか？「当然だよ、自分はしてもらう権利がある」みたいにふざけていってる感じなのでしょうか？ (2)女の子が昔微妙な関係だった彼（お互い好きだったけれどつきあうまでいたらなかった）に道端でばったり会って立ち話をするのですが、そのときその彼が"We should get together and do something sometime."と言っていました。こういう場合のshouldは「べき」と訳すと変ですけど、彼は「会わなきゃ！」と強く主張している感じなのでしょうか？それとも普通に軽く誘っているだけでしょうか？Let's～. とかDo you want to～？と誘うときと何かが違う気もするのですが・・・ ※１と２は違うドラマです
