>safeは副詞 実は名詞なんですよ。あえて品詞は何かといえば。文法的に言えば、andという等位接続詞で結ばれてるから両方とも名詞とせざるを得ません。 日本語訳は副詞っぽくしてますが（もちろんそれで何ら問題ありませんし、正しい訳だと思います） でも、この文は文法的に見るだけでは何も見えてきません。 そもそも英語の品詞と日本語訳とは何ら関連がありませんから。 英語で名詞だったとしても、日本語で副詞として訳して自然であればそれで構いません。 で、（back) home and safe ですが (実際safelyよりもよく使います）、何故こんな言い方をするかというと、リズムが良いからです。 声に出して読んでみて下さい。（back) home safely と、（back) home and safe どちらが耳に快く流れるか。home and safe の方が圧倒的に快いと思います。 home safely は 1音節＋2音節 とばらばらですが、home and safeはandを挟んで1音節ずつでバランスが良いからです。 home and safeを発音するときは、ホーム アンド セイフ みたいに区切らないで、ホーマ（ン）セイフみたいにandを弱く発音して下さい。

I found her crying when I returned to the place where she was. という文章ですが、<>を副詞節のカッコ、[]を名詞節のカッコとすると、 I found her crying <when I returned to the place <where she was>>. と解釈するのが普通（？）ですが、僕はふと、the placeを省略できるのでは？と思いました。省略すると、 I found her crying <when I returned to [where she was]>. として、returned toのtoの前置詞の目的語として、名詞節として解釈すると、文法的に成り立つことはできるのではないのでしょうか？
