safeは形容詞ですよ。 safeを副詞の形にすると、safely。形容詞＋ly＝副詞となります。 これは並列、もしくは添加のandでしょう。 まず、知覚動詞は大丈夫ですか？この場合、see O ～の形をとっています。そこで見てみると…… see her son（Ｏ：目的語）back home and safe. の部分だけ取り外してみると、her sonが目的語だというのは分かります。そのあとの「～」に当てはまるのが、「back home」と「safe」です。ここはつまり、二つの形容詞を並列あるいは添加しているということになります。では分かりやすいように、ちょっと直訳っぽい形にしてみます。 she was relieved to see her son back home and safe. （彼女は息子が”帰ってきたこと”、そして”無事だったこと”を見て安心した。） という風に見てみればどうでしょう？「帰ってきたこと」と「無事だったこと」をお母さんは見て、ほっと安心したということです。 「帰ってくる」「無事である」という状態は一度見るだけで、どちらも確認することができます。そのためにここは形容詞をandでつなげて並列もしくは添加をしているというわけなのです。 ちょっとややこしい説明かもしれませんが、おそらくそういうことなんじゃないかと思います。

I found her crying when I returned to the place where she was. という文章ですが、<>を副詞節のカッコ、[]を名詞節のカッコとすると、 I found her crying <when I returned to the place <where she was>>. と解釈するのが普通（？）ですが、僕はふと、the placeを省略できるのでは？と思いました。省略すると、 I found her crying <when I returned to [where she was]>. として、returned toのtoの前置詞の目的語として、名詞節として解釈すると、文法的に成り立つことはできるのではないのでしょうか？
