(314) Bring home……

  • (1)(ll. 695-705) Bring home a wife to your house when you are of the right age, while you are not far short of thirty years nor much above; this is the right age for marriage. Let your wife have been grown up four years, and marry her in the fifth. Marry a maiden, so that you can teach her careful ways, and especially marry one who lives near you, but look well about you and see that your marriage will not be a joke to your neighbours. For a man wins nothing better than a good wife, and, again, nothing worse than a bad one, a greedy soul who roasts her man without fire, strong though he may be, and brings him to a raw untimely old age.
  • (1)(ll. 695-705) This passage is from 'Works and Days' by Evelyn White. (1)(2)(3) are consecutive sentences. I have questions regarding the translation and vocabulary.
  • (1) When you are of the right age: Can it be translated as 'when you are a man of the right age'? (2) Let your wife have been grown up: The meaning would be 'let her marry in the fifth'. Also, in passive voice and present perfect form, does 'grown up' indicate the state of her marriage? Would it make sense if the woman is 12-15 years younger than the man? (3) Marry a maiden: Can it be translated as 'marry a young woman'? And does 'careful ways' mean teaching her how to take care of things around her? Also, 'look well about you and see that your marriage will not be a joke to your neighbours': Can it be translated as 'make sure your marriage is not a subject of ridicule among your neighbors'? (4) For a man wins nothing better than a good wife: Does it mean that a man desires nothing more than a good wife? And does 'roasts her man without fire' mean criticizing her man without any reason? Would it make sense if it means lacking passion even though the man is strong and it leads to early aging?

▼(a) when you are of the right ageについて、ofがあります。when you are a man of the right age. ▼(b)let your wife have been grown upについて、let文、後続文は、let her marry in the fifthの意味となる。 ▽let は let your wife have been grown up だけのlet で、marry in the fifth はそのまま「結婚せよ」という単純な命令形でいいと思います。 ▼For a man wins nothing better than a good wife,・・・ (a)複雑な言い回しである。 ▼(b) a greedy soul who roasts her man without fireについて、soul whoとあるから、soulは明らかに人物(妻)である。 soulは明らかに人物(妻)である ▽本来は greedy soul の前に whose があって、nothing worse than a bad one,(whose)greedy soul who roasts her man without fire, strong though he may be, and brings him to a raw old age. roasts her man without fire・・・火のない火焙り、生殺し、うわぁ、怖い表現。

次の文 greedy soul who roasts her man without fire, strong though he may be, and brings him to a raw old age.

Once you find love, you are reliable and discreet, helpful and capable of organizing your partners life as well as looking after him, practical and serious, you pay attention to the smaller details of love and your partners needs. This may encourage you lover to be selfish or thoughtless. He may not appreciate you because you are modest and don't point out the many invisible things you do for him, the effort of your caring, and thoughtfulness the making everything just right for him. You are capable of such great loyalty and devotion on the emotional level. Your soul mate is a shining star, a man who has met the high standard that your soul desires. Sometimes this decision is straightforward. A proposal of a marriage, and an acceptance or refusal. But sometimes life is less well defined than that and the decision is made by the soul, it is made in the depths unconsciously. By you or by him. You may feel you have had enough of this particular man, or karma for one life for example and your spirit may withdraw because of pain when you could have struggled on perhaps and changed the ending to the story. Or you may unconsciously behave in such a way that he is the one to end the relationship against your will. Life is complicated, and the stars only really sketch this life, you add your own complications to become woven into the destiny This can be said of all relationships of course, not just your own. But it is right to state it. Some people hear the word soul mate and they assume that nothing can ever go wrong. That is not so. What I promise you is a future, it is up to you and him to make it happy or sad, short or lasting.
