「あなたが熱心に仕事に打ち込んでいる、とくにクリスマスイブだったのでびっくりしましたが、のを見て大変嬉しく思いました。」 と言った意味でしょう、強いて省略されたと思われるものを復元しますと if I was surprised... になるのでしょうか、delighted と surprised は文法的には同じ語尾なので並列、意味的には、ちょッと反対側、なので if が間に入っている、とも読めそうです。
