大学受験を意識したある有名な英作文用のトレーニング本の一部、日本語(1)を英訳せよ、という課題の解答例(2)の解説についてです。 (1)一昔前だったら、駅や、レストランや、病院の待合室でタバコに火を付けるのをためらう人はいなかったであろう。しかし今日では、公共の場での喫煙は禁止されたり、きびしく制限されている。 (2)At one time, no one would have hesitated to light up at a station, in a restaurant, or in a hospital waiting room. Nowadays, however, smoking is banned or strictly restricted in public places. この前半の英訳の述語動詞の部分 ” would have hesitated…” を解説で、「仮定法過去完了」であるとしています。 私の理解では、仮定法過去完了は「過去の事実の反対の仮定・想像を表す」(『ロイヤル英文法』より)ものなので、この場合は原理的に当てはまらないのではないのかと思うんです。 『ジーニアス英和辞典』でI[独立用法]の1[可能性・推量]と分類している用法の一種で、現在時からの過去に対する推量 ”would+完了形” のパターン(「…たでしょう」、例文:She would have been 80 when she died. 彼女が死んだとき80歳にはなっていたろう。)ではないかという気が私はするんですがいかがでしょうか? ”would+完了形” 以外にも ”might+完了形” や”could+完了形” と同じのパターンではないかと思うんですが。 有名な本だけに気になっています。ご教示ください。
