こんにちは。 慣れないと奇異に映る英語ですね。 辞書の of の項にでていると思いますが of + 抽象名詞＝ 形容詞 になるものがいくつかあります。 of importance = important ; of value = valuable; of use = useful etc. 出ているものは全部覚えて下さい。どれもこれもよく使われます。 で、なぜ importantと言えばすむのに、of importance などという言い方をするのかといいますと、１つは、importance という名詞になると、その前に形容詞がおけるということです。 of great importance くらいですと、very important と同じだから、そんなに有り難みを感じないでしょうが、of minor importanceの内容を、副詞+important で表すのは至難の業です。ですから、of minor importance（それほど重要でない）は、まさにこのフレーズならではの持ち味と言えるでしょう。 Some people say shoplifting is of minor importance because shoplifting is very common. は、「万引きはありふれているからたいしたことではないと考える人たちがいます」 という意味になります。 以上、あれこれ言いましたが、少しでも御参考になれば幸いです。

God is of no importance unless he is of supreme. Speed is of the essence. 上記の文で使われているofの意味がいまいちよくわかりません。 例えば Speed is the essence. he is supremeでもいいと思うのですが、 わざわざ ofをつかうのは強調するとかの意味があるのでしょうか？ また God is of no importanceはa manが省略されたものでしょうか？ God is (a man) of no importance. 宜しくお願い致します。

英語やり直し組です 本日「This matter is of grave concern to the United Nations」という文を見ました。 importanceとは違いof grave concrenのofは無くてもいいように感じたので色々調べてみたのですが Of greater concern is … Of immediate concern is … のようにofがあるのと My biggest concern is … concern is … のように無いのが多く見つかりました。 有っても無くても意味はわかるので気にする必要はないのかもしれませんがこの場合どっちでもいいのでしょうか？ お願いします。
