論文の意味がつかめません
触媒に関する論文なのですが、いまいち英文の意味がつかめません。 The number of active sites in catalyst is usually only a small fraction of the catalyst present, and the amount of total catalyst used, a small fraction of the amount of solvent. 自分なりに訳してみたのですが、 「触媒の活性部位の数は触媒に存在するほんの一部分である。そして、使われる総触媒の量は、溶媒のほんの一部分である。」 よく意味がわかりません。 どなたかよろしくお願いします。

「触媒の活性部位の数は通常存在する触媒のほんの一部分であり、また全触媒のほんの一部であり、(活性なのは）溶媒量のほんの一部である」 です。これが「事実」を良く表しています。触媒ってつかみ所がないです。

「触媒の活性部位の数は存在する触媒のごく一部に過ぎない、しかも触媒の総量は溶媒に対して少量である。」 じゃないでしょうか？つまり、触媒の活性部分は、極めて微量なんだと言っているのでしょう。 鍵は、「and」を「そして」ではなく「しかも」と考える点だと思います。

直訳ではないんですが、 この文章からだけ内容を察するに 触媒を溶媒で希釈し、溶液もしくはスラリー（縣濁）状態で 扱っており、何かの反応に用いた際、溶液量および触媒濃度 が高いにもかかわらず、期待よりも低い触媒効果しか得られ なかったという結果に対して考察した文なのかなぁという印 象を受けました。 全然、見当はずれだったらごめんなさい。でも 科学論文を読む際に、英語力に自信がない、もしくは文法が 明らかに間違っている場合は、行間を読む必要性があると思 います。 翻訳の仕事ではないのなら、直訳にこだわらず、ニュアンス だけ、取り違えなければｏｋじゃないでしょうか？
「触媒の活性部位の数は，通常、存在する触媒に対して、わずかな割合でしかない。仮に、すべての触媒が働いたとしても、溶媒に対するその量の割合自体小さいのである」というかんじじゃないでしょうか。

今、英語の論文を読んでいるのですが、訳せないところがあります。 As illustrated in Fig. 3C, site directed mutagenesis of either site 1 (S1) or site 2 (S2) resulted in a moderate but significant (P<0.0001) decrease in the expression of sseL::lacZ. Additionally, an sseL manipulated promoter containing both mutations (S1+S2) demonstrated accumulative reduction in the expression of sseL::lacZ by more than 2-fold (P<0.0001), indicating that the S1 and S2 sites are required for optimal expression of sseL, possibly due to their role as PhoP binding sites. To further examine this idea and to rule out the possibility that these positions are used as SsrB binding sites, we analyzed the expression of an altered sseL promoter harboring both mutations in a phoP ssrB background complemented with PhoP or SsrB, provided in trans. In the presence of SsrB, this mutated promoter was readily able to induce sseL::lacZ expression, suggesting that SsrB does not bind to these sites.
