asを接続詞と考えると，後には節が来るので，示された文では節となる部分の主語が無いけれどこれでいいのか－－というご質問ですね？ 実は，このようなasは関係代名詞と考えられます。 as is often the case（よくあるように）などはほとんど決まり文句といえましょう。 手元の辞書には，as was the custom in those days.（それは当時普通の習慣だった）という例文がありました。 この場合，もし前に主節が来て，それを受ける形でas is～となるのであれば，関係代名詞のwhichを使って，which is～としても同じ意味になります。 ところが，質問の文では，as is very well known の先行詞（つまり，よく知られていること）は何かというと，その後に来るone of～という節全体ですね。 このようなときは，whichでは変です。Whichは，本当に先行している語句でないと先行詞にできません。（絶対そうかといわれると分かりませんが，少なくとも普通ではないと思います） いきなりWhich is very well known～と始めると，疑問文のようです。 つまり，asは「前の文，前の節，あるいは後ろに来る節を先行詞とすることができる関係代名詞」なのです。（後にあるのに先行詞というのが変でしたら，「その関係代名詞が指示していることがら」とでもしておきましょうか。）
