１。なぜoff ofとなっているのでしょうか？ この場合の of は、下記のように印欧語の語根＊apo 「～から」に遡り、ゲルマン祖語の *ap 「～から」を通じた「～から離れて」という原義が残っているからです。 http://www.etymonline.com/index.php?allowed_in_frame=0&search=of ２。of は必要なのでしょうか？ 今は省略する場合もあります。off も同源ですから一種の重複とも考えられたのでしょう。
