onは何かに接している時に使うので、棚もそうですが壁に接している場合にも 使われます。 inはバッグや箱などすべての面が覆われている物の中に入れる場合等です。 onは置く。inは入れるという動作が多いと思います。

中３の教科書にHow many stops is Mita from here?という文章がありました。この場合はisでいいのですか？たとえばHow many books are there on the desk?となりますよね。教科書なので間違いないとは思いますが、How many stops are Mita from here?なら納得なんですが。

on theについて この文章で There are large German and Irish neighborhoods in cities like chicago,and German and Scandinavian farming communities (on the) Great Plains and in Michigan. という文章なのですが communitiesとGreat Plainsの間にon theがあるのですが、全体的には訳せてるのですが、on theをうまく訳せません(^_^;) どのように訳すべきでしょうか？ バカですいませんm(_ _)m ご意見よろしくお願いしますm(_ _)m
