silent on one of whose peaks we may well watch it with a mild surmise. ある研究者が発見をしたという文章の最後に上の文があります。whoseですし、人間はその研究者しか出てこないのでその人のことに触れていると思うのですが、「人の絶頂については漠とした推量でそれを予見することはできるが、それについては言葉にはしない」といったように解釈してよろしいでしょうか？ご意見・アドバイスがありましたらどうぞよろしくお願いいたします。

まず、whose が受けているのは人ではなく Darien という地名。パナマの県名のようです。関係代名詞 whose は「もの」を受けることも普通です。（辞書には出ていませんが、一部の英語圏では「もの」を受ける whose には違和感を感じる人も多いようです。） ‘silent on…’ 以下は分詞構文の付帯状況です。 ほとんど d-y さんと同解釈ですが、ちょっとわたしの訳はニュアンスが異なりますから、私訳を載せておきます。 「…そして、非常に興味深いことに、この西端を示す縦線はダリエン湾をも突き進んでいった。パナマ共和国のダリエン県のどこかの山の頂に静かにたたずんで、あとは適当に西端がどこいらへんになるか推測することになろう。」

中途半端な切り方をせず、文章の頭から引用してくれないと、意味が取り難くなります。 単にon whose peakと言わず、on one of whose peaksと言っているあたりからして、おそらく御質問者の解釈されたような意味ではないような気もします。 また、watch itのitが何を意味しているかも、引用部分の前のところを確認しないと、はっきりしないはずです。 文頭（大文字で始まっているところ）から省略なしで引用していただけないでしょうか。

ご回答ありがとうございます。 前文をご紹介します。Near Eastを探すというジョーク的な文章なのですが一文をご紹介してもitの意味まで行けそうにありませんので粗筋も書きます。非常に面倒な話しなので追加のご回答は出来ましたらで結構でございます。 He wanted to find where it ends.
