この構文に限らず、no = not ... any と考えるといいと思います。 例えばThere is no ... = There is not a ...

どうもこんばんは。いつもお世話になっています。現在他の質問をしていながら、新たな質問をすることをお許し下さい。 俗にいう「鯨の公式」と呼ばれるものですが・・ A whale is no more a fish than a horse is. は A whale is not a fish any more than a horse is.に言い換えられると習いましたが、A whale is not any fish than a horse.やA whale is not any more a fish than a horse.ではいけませんか？僕にはどうしてnot anyにする際にnotとanyを離さなくてはいけないのかがよくわかりません。よろしくお願いします。

(2)Work is ( no ) ( more ) the object of life than play is. （１）と（２）の書き換えを勉強しています。（１）から（２）にするのに、 Work is the object of life no more than play is. にならない理由がわかりません。 no the object of lifeにならない（noのあとtheがつかない）くらいはわかるのですが、I like basketball more(better) than soccer. を考えると be動詞の後名詞が来たら moreが最後くる。とかWork is 名詞+moreとかになるのじゃないですか？ たぶん何かが間違っているとは思うんですが、何が間違っているかわかりません。よろしくお願いします。

- 中学英語のしつもんです。
弟に英語を教えていたところわからないものを見つけてしまったので質問させていただきます。 比較の範囲なのですが、 S V no more ～ than S' V' ….で SVが～でないのは、S'V'が…でないのと同じだ。 という訳が作れる、と弟のノートに書いてありました。 その下に例文があり、 クジラが魚でないのは馬が魚でないのと同じだ。 A whale is no more a fish than a horse is not a fish. とありました。 ノートを参考に訳を作ると「クジラが魚でないのは、馬が魚でなくないのと同じだ」になってしまうと思うのですが、 なにが違うのか解説をお願いします。

My flat was in an old-fashioned building, not many stories high,and I was on more human terms with the staff than is possible in one of modern Babels. 上記の文なのですが、後半は、A is no more B than C is D の、いわゆる「鯨が魚でないのは馬が魚でないのと同じ」という構文(^^)でしょうか？このstaff は何でしょう。何になじめないと言ってるのでしょうか？ご教示くださいませんでしょうか。いつもありがとうございます。

何日か考えたんですけど自分の頭では理解できません それだとnot more B any とはなぜならないんでしょうか？
