Today, about 10 percent of the world's population does not have enough water. This number may rise to 35 percent in 2025. What is more, water which is used in cities and industrial areas is often affected by pollution. Shortage of fresh water also affects food production. People throughout the world may suffer from serious food shortages in the future. We live in a country where we can get clean water just by turning on the faucet, but we need to try to secure more stable sources of fresh water for everyone in the world.

Please note that we are not noticing things to get rid of them. We are noticing them because they are real and we need to start with reality, not fantasy. In this practice, we learn to be totally honest about what is happening within ourselves. There is no scope for pretending. Surely it is possible to be alright with whatever is happening in our bodies for just one moment in time? Just a single moment. We don’t need to worry about any other moment.

And how we understand the science is as much the result of our own cultural values and biases as it is of the date itself. After all, if we're all just victims of our unconscious biases and our tribal identities what hope do we have of actually finding a common truth?

Generally speaking, countries with a high standard of living consume more water than those with a low standard of living. The United States consumes by far the greatest amount of water: an average that amounts to 7200 liters per American each day. In comparison, total daily consumption of water per person amounts to 4800 liters in Canada, 1400 liters in Britain, and 1200 in China. In Japan, total water consumption amounts to 2600 liters per person per day: an amount that corresponds to filling up a bathtub thirteen times.  Water on our planet is not an unlimited resource. If we keep using water at the present rate, we will suffer from constant shortage in the near future. This could lead to nations fighting over scarce water supplies, just as they have fought to get gold and petroleum in the past.

。。 You may wonder why Hawaiians are so eager to maintain their native language. I think the answer is that language is more than just a means of exchanging information. We see the world around us through the window of our language. It enables us to share the history and culture of our people, and so it helps us find our identity. If we lose our language, we lose something of ourselves. Imagine that English has taken the place of the Japanese language here in Japan. What happens to your culture and identity? English is useful for communication in many parts of the world, but your mother tongue is an important part of your identity. In Japan ,too, there is a minority language, just as in Hawaii. The Ainu people have lose much of their language and culture. Today, they are trying to revive their traditions. In this class we are going to study English of course, but I want you to remember that your mother tongue is the most important language in the world. Mahalo for listening.

For years people have said the last place that we have not yet explored is outer space, not on earth. But we really do not have to leave our planet. Certainly it is not only in fields of physical science that there is room and need for progress. In social fields there is, if anything, even more room and need, not only for progress in the known branches of knowledge, but also for new sciences. This need could hardly be exaggerated. The very progress of physical science, which resulted the construction of atomic bombs, has placed before us the following social problem. We must either find a way to adjust international relations peacefully, or we may destroy civilization and possibly the human race along with it. On the other hand, it is equally clear that if world wars can be prevented, and all the new possibities are used for peaceful progress, a new age may well dawn. But in order to take advantage of such possibities, we must solve our social problems.

和訳をお願いします 長くなってすみません(>_<) Although the population growth rate is expected to slow down, an increasing population still creates problems. First of all, with more people in the world, more food must be grown to feed them, though the amount of land we can use for agriculture is limited. According to the FAO, grain consumption has increased by 200 percent since 1961, but the amount of farmland remains almost unchanged. Second,a growing population is harmful to the environment. With more people and increased human activities, it is natural for the amount of CO2 in the air to increase. This speeds up global warming. Scientists expect that temperatures will rise by 0.4℃ in the next 20 years. An increasing pollution brings problems not only to developing nations, but also to the whole world. If we continue on our current path, the earth's resources may disappear before we know it.
