英文記事の英語がおかしいような気がします。
この英語おかしくないですか？ 今日職場で読んだ英文記事の英語がおかしいような気がします。 "Prices of newly built homes in 50 of the 70 large Chinese cities rose in May from the previous month, down from 56 cities in April." 文法的に、"down from "は"Prices"にかかる気がするのですが、文章は、”新築物件の価格が上がった都市の数”にかけています。 英語の得意な方、ご意見頂けますと幸いです。

＃１です。 なるほど、質問者様の言わんとしていることがわかりました。 例えば以下のようにすれば誤解を招きにくくなるということですね。 "50 of the 70 large Chinese cities had prices of newly built homes rise in May from the previous month, down from 56 cities in April." 確かにこの方が文法的に理に適っているような気がします。本来、こうあるべきかも知れません。 ただ、ご存知の通り、新聞記事では多少文法をねじ伏せてでも簡略化する場合があるのも事実です。 e.g. The Prime Minister said (on) Monday that .... それはそれとして、ご指摘の英語は確かに "Reader Friendly" ではないですね。

「中国の70の主要な都市のうち、5月は50都市において、新築の家屋の価格が前の月に比べて上昇した。4月に記録した56都市より減少した」ってことですよね。 原文の前半（コンマより前の部分）が、「プライスが何パーセント上昇した」とか言う話だったのであれば、お説のとおり後半は珍奇です。しかし実際には、プライスではなく都市の数がいくつだったかという文章ですので、後半が都市の数に言及するのもまた正しい、ということになるかと思います。

ご回答ありがとうございます。 英文を書くときに、カンマで説明文を追加するような時は、主語にかけるようにと教えられたような気がしておりました。でもgoo2005gooさんがおっしゃる通り、その文章自体が都市の数がいくつかということが重要ですので、その場合特に不自然な言い回しでもないという事で理解致しました。 ありがとうございます。

It falls from 56 cities in April to 50 in May.

I understood what the writer intended to mean from the statement, but what I wanted to know was whether this sentence is grammatically correct and sounds natural to natives. So, your opinion is that this sentence is grammatically correct? Thank you anyway for your comment..

Ａ：前月に比べ、４月に新築物件の価格が上がった都市の数 ＝ ７０都市の内、５６都市 Ｂ：前月に比べ、５月に新築物件の価格が上がった都市の数 ＝ ７０都市の内、５０都市 つまり、対前月比（from the previous month）で新築物件の価格が上昇（rose）した都市は、４月は５６だったのが、５月は５０に減少（down from 56 to 50）ということです。不動産バブルが鈍化していると言いたいのでしょう。 英語はおかしくないと思います。

ご回答ありがとうございます。 文章の言わんとする意味は通じるのですが、文法的に果たしてネイティブが読んだ時に自然な文章になっているのかが気になりました。例えば"The price rose by10 %, down from 20% in the previous month." という文章であれば主語にdown fromがかかり自然に聞こえますが、質問に書いた文章では、主語にdown fromがかからないので・・・気になりました。 これは文法的にも間違っていないというご意見ですね。 ありがとうございました。

再度ご回答いただきありがとうございます。 中国の不動産価格に関して書かれている記事でしたが、大変読みにくい文章であったため、自分の英語力を棚に上げ、記者の英語がおかしいんじゃないかと疑っておりました。での他の方のご意見から見ても、特に不自然な文章でもないようで、ｃｂｍ５１９１０さんがおっしゃる通り、ただ「reader unfriendly」ということで納得いたしました。ご丁寧なご回答ありがとうございました。
