補足します。 過去の歴史は現代史を通じて初めて理解可能という歴史論もよく出る話題です。

補足です。 現在残っている『歴史』とされているものの中には、記録（または資料）を残した人々の思い違いや極めて主観的な見方による一方的なものが含まれているかもしれません。または、歴史上の勝者にとって都合のよいねつ造が含まれていても不思議ではありません。 例えば、「徳川幕府によって虐げられた江戸時代の農民」というイメージは、明治政府による意図的なプロパガンダによるものだという主張も一部にあります。 しかし、時間的（または物理的な）制約を考えれば、現代に生きる私たちができることは今残っている記録や資料から『本当の歴史』を想像することだけです。もはや自分の目で実際に確認することのできない『本当の歴史』を知るためには、できるだけ多くの客観的な資料を集めることから始めるしかないというこなのでしょう。 ご参考になれば・・・。

「history」という言葉には複数の意味があると考えることができます。 ひとつは「実際に過去において起きた事実」で、もうひとつは「現在残っている資料から推測された（結果、歴史的な事実だと私たちが思っている）こと」です。 前者を『（本当の）歴史』、後者を『（想像上の）歴史』とよぶと分かりやすいのではないかと思います。お尋ねの英文は、このことを踏まえた上で考えると良いと思います。 「過去に置いて実際に起きたことという意味での『（本当の）歴史』には、現在残っている不完全な資料（ジグソパズル）である（という意味での）『（想像上の）歴史』を通してのみ近づくことができるのです。それ以外に私たちが『（本当の）歴史』を理解することはできないのです。」 ご参考になれば・・・。

過去という意味での歴史は、現代の不完全なジグソーパズルという意味での歴史を通じて初めて把握（理解）できる。他の方法では理解できないのだ。 ・accessible＝easy to understand ・get it＝understand it というイディオムで大学入試では頻出です。また get it right 正しく理解する の形も重要です。
