toの使いかた
You had better avoid such people as flatter you to your face. ・あなたの顔についてお世辞をいうような人は避けたほうがよい ・面と向かってお世辞を言ってくるような人は避けたほうがよい この文はどっちの訳になるのでしょうか？ なんとなく下のほうがあってるのかなあと思っているのですが、全然自信ありません。 よろしくお願いします。

皆さんの回答の通りだとも思います。ただ、自然な英語の文としては had bettterの使い方に違和感を感じますが、これはネイティヴの方が書いた文でしょうか？意味の割にはかなり威圧的な感じを受けてしまいますが・・・。

stripeさん、こんにちは。 ＞You had better avoid such people as flatter you to your face. これは、２番目の意味になります。 toは、・・に対して、・・と向かい合って、という意味がありますね。 face to face 向かい合って、などです。 flatterで辞書を引きますと、こんな例文が載っています。 He flattered her about her appearance. 彼は、彼女に、彼女の容姿について、お世辞を言った。 だから、顔についてお世辞を言うなら flatter one about one's face となると思います。 ご質問の場合は、面と向かって、こびへつらってくる人、ということになりますね。

どうもありがとうございます。 to your faceといういいかたでは顔について、という意味にならないんですね。 face to face というフレーズを頭に入れときたいと思います！これならもう間違えないと思うので(＾＾； ＞He flattered her about her appearance. 容姿について言う場合はこんないいかたをすればよいのですね。 よくわかりました。 勉強になりました！ ありがとうございました。
2番目の意味です。補足すれば 「面と向かって」というのは 「あからさまに」ということです。

＞顔について、というのであれば、about your faceとtoの代わりにaboutを使います. toではなく、aboutを使うと顔について、という意味になるんですね。 前置詞のニュアンスって難しいなと思ってしまいます(＾＾； ＞You'd better avoid such people as flatter （you) to your face about your face こんな言い方などもできるのですね。 勉強になりました。 ありがとうございました。
