私はまだまだ英語の面接をできるほどの力をもっていませんが勉強のためにいろいろな文を訳して文法を覚えている者です。 ある英語の面接での例文を見つけて訳しているうちに以下の文をどう訳すのかが分からず投稿しました。 I’m also a self starter and work hard to identify new areas to target and existing areas that can be improved. 上記の文で「I’m also a self starter and work hard to identify new areas to target」までは頑張って辞書を使って訳すことが出来ましたが and 以下が分かりません。 「existing areas that can be improved.」この部分は「改善される事が出来るという既存のエリア」としか今の自分には訳せず四苦八苦してます。 ・この箇所はどう訳され、なぜそう訳すのでしょうか？ ・canの次になぜbeがきて受動態のような形となっているのでしょうか？ 本当に英語の初心者でこれからどんどん文を訳せるようにしたいと思っていますのでぜひ教えてください。

canは～することができるという意味ですが～されるはずと訳されているのはどうしてでしょうか？ canという動詞は「できる」という意味はご指摘の通りです。しかしcanには日本語のできる以上の強い意味があります。できるという可能性を述べているのではなく（その場合もあります。）、確実にできると述べているわけですから、受身になってもその意味は引き継がれます。従いましてcan be improvedといいますと、「改善される既存の領域」と言うよりも「改善されるはずの領域」と述べたほうがより原義に近い物となると回答者は考えました。 もし可能性をのべるのであればこの部分が「existing area that could be improved」とすべきとおもいます。ご存知のように「もし実行すれば」とか「状況が許せば」という曖昧さが残りますので、couldであれば「改善される可能性のある既存の領域」という訳になると思います。 On Lineの英辞朗に以下のような文が例文としてあげられていました。 〔否定形のcan'tまたはcannotで〕～のはずがない◆must（～に違いない）と対比される ・He can't have done it by himself. : 彼が一人でそれをやれたはずがない。 ・She can't be working at this hour! : 彼女がこんな時間帯まで働いているはずがないだろ。 ・That can't be (true). : そんなはずはありません。／そんなばかな。／そんなことはあり得ない。

work hard to identify new areas to target. 目標とする新しい領域を明確にするために努力すること to identify existing areas that can be improved.また改善されるはずの既存の領域を明確にするために努力すること ＞・この箇所はどう訳され、なぜそう訳すのでしょうか？ 上に記載しましたように合わせて全体は以下のように訳せると思います。 「私は自発的に物事を行うもので、目標とすべき新しい領域と改善され得る既存の領域を明確にするために努力するものです。」 ＞・canの次になぜbeがきて受動態のような形となっているのでしょうか？ 「改善される」と訳せますが、「改善する」とは訳せませんので、受身ととなります。

回答ありがとうございます。 もう一つ質問がございます。 canは～することができるという意味ですが～されるはずと訳されているのはどうしてでしょうか？ 英語が全く分からなくてすみません・・・

英語で「歴史とか科学とか難しいことが漫画で描かれていたら、そういうのに興味ない人も 読んでみようと思うかもしれないし、それをきっかけにそういうのに興味をもつかもしれない」 という日本語でもちょっとまとめずらい文を英語にしたいのですが。。。。 下記のような感じでいいのでしょうか？ Manga about difficult thoings such as history and science might make someone who are not interesting in those areas read it,and also they might be interesting those areas.

It's only human to use words to describe what can never be touched. この文の中で、２箇所質問があります。まず、that's how we ～ のとろです。文法書では、「それは～の方法だ」とか、「そのようにして～だ」と訳していましたが、それではすっきりしません。どのように訳したらよいのでしょうか。次に、最後のwhat can ～ のところです。訳がわかりません。touched はどう訳せばいいのでしょうか。宜しくお願いいたします。
